The second season of America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders highlighted ongoing contract struggles faced by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC), spearheaded by the team’s longtime choreographer, Judy Trammell. During discussions about improving the cheerleaders’ compensation, Amanda Howard expressed hope for higher salaries, emphasizing the hard work the cheerleaders put into their roles. Judy’s reaction raised eyebrows when she suggested that the dual careers pursued by the cheerleaders—particularly their roles as influencers—might be more commendable than quitting their full-time jobs. Judy’s perspective seemed to reflect a traditional view of cheerleading, which complicates the evolving nature of their roles today.

Judy later clarified her stance in an interview with Us Weekly, acknowledging the changing landscape where many cheerleaders have embraced social media influencing as a viable career path. She recognized that this new direction could be beneficial, albeit difficult for her to fully comprehend. The acknowledgment that the cheerleaders are expanding their opportunities indicates a shift in the industry and highlights the need for open dialogue regarding their pay structures and career sustainability beyond the traditional cheerleading role.

Among the cheerleaders fighting for better compensation, Jada McLean emerged as a key figure advocating for change. She emphasized the challenges of balancing multiple jobs, arguing that doing so detracts from a cheerleader’s ability to fully commit and excel. Jada’s stance echoed a broader sentiment within the group: satisfactory pay for their hard work is not just about compensation but about respect for their dedication and commitment to the team itself. This correlation between financial recognition and emotional fulfillment in their roles reveals deeper implications regarding the value placed on cheerleaders in professional sports.

Fans were also engaged by the squad’s actions, notably a planned walkout to protest their contract statuses, although the attempt ultimately fell through due to a leak. This incident illustrates the challenges the cheerleaders face not only from within their organization but also in rallying public support for their cause. Overcoming these obstacles demonstrates the complex dynamics of professional cheerleading as the women strive for better working conditions and recognition of their contributions to the Dallas Cowboys brand.

Kelli Finglass, the team’s director, acknowledged the evolving nature of influencer culture, stating that while she has dabbled in it herself, it is a realm she struggles to navigate. She conveyed a commitment to the team’s continuous development project and reflected on the challenging dynamics of contract negotiations. Despite the complications surrounding the contract discussions, Kelli remained optimistic about the cheerleaders’ performance and morale throughout the season, emphasizing that their accomplishments extend beyond just the football field.

As America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders continues to stream on Netflix, it serves as a lens into the lives and struggles of these women. Themes of ambition, recognition, and evolution within their roles paint a picture of empowerment while addressing the discord between traditional cheerleading expectations and the modern realities of the profession. As the cheerleaders navigate their paths, both as entertainers and influencers, their fight for equitable compensation underscores the importance of valuing their contributions, not only to the team but also to the broader conversation about professionalism in sports.
