Jax Gratton, a 34-year-old hair stylist from Denver, who had been missing since April 15, was found dead on a Friday in Lakewood, Colorado. Her body was discovered in an alley, prompting the Lakewood Police Department to announce that they were investigating a “suspicious death” after a bystander found remains in an advanced state of decomposition. Although the police did not initially confirm her identity, Gratton’s family expressed their heartbreak on social media, stating that the deceased was indeed Jax. Her mother, Cherilynne Gratton-Camis, conveyed profound sorrow while remembering the joy and love Jax brought into their lives, reinforcing the impact of her loss on the community.

The search for Jax had galvanized friends, family members, and the broader Denver community for nearly two months. Jax was last seen leaving her home around 10 p.m. on April 15, with her roommate later noting she planned to be gone for about three hours. Her unexpected absence triggered an extensive community response, leading to efforts that included distributing flyers and circulating her image across social media platforms. The unceremonious end of her disappearance raises critical questions regarding the circumstances surrounding her death, highlighting the pressing need for closure among her loved ones and the community.

Prior to the identification of her remains, the police described the condition of the body as being significantly decomposed. They had not released any information concerning the cause or manner of death at that juncture. The discovery took place on the 9600 block of West Colfax Avenue, and the police’s careful investigation reflects the sensitivity surrounding the case, especially given its implications for Jax’s identity as a transgender woman. This aspect potentially adds layers of complexity regarding societal attitudes and the broader issues faced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Cherilynne’s poignant message on social media also emphasized the wider struggle faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, illustrating how Jax’s story is not just an isolated incident. It serves as a somber reminder of the courage individuals in the community display each day in their fight for safety and equality. She urged that the challenges faced should not be a fight, yet acknowledged the reality that many still face discrimination and violence. Gratton’s disappearance and eventual discovery reflect not just a personal tragedy but also a societal issue that calls for deeper examination and action.

In the aftermath of Jax’s death, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office announced plans for an autopsy to verify the identification of the body and determine the cause of death. This official confirmation is crucial for the family and community as they seek answers and justice in light of her tragic circumstances. The ongoing investigation by local law enforcement seeks to shed light on the events leading up to her disappearance and subsequent death, with hopes of providing clarity to those who knew and loved her.

In the wake of this heartbreaking situation, Cherilynne expressed gratitude toward those who supported the family through their ordeal. She recognized the collective effort of community members who shared information and bridged connections to help find Jax. This spirit of solidarity underscores the immense bond shared within the Denver community and reflects an ongoing commitment to seek justice and address broader issues surrounding safety and recognition for the LGBTQIA+ individuals. As the investigation unfolds, both the family and community remain hopeful for closure and answers amidst their grief.
