Dermatologist Shares Surprising Tip to Prevent Ingrown Hairs Post-Shaving

In her TikTok clip, dermatologist Dr. Samantha Ellis addresses common skincare issues related to shaving, particularly the occurrence of post-shave bumps, redness, and ingrown hairs. With over 7.8 million views, her video has resonated with many seeking effective shaving techniques. One crucial piece of advice she offers challenges common assumptions about razors. While women often prefer multi-blade razors for smoother, faster shaving, Dr. Ellis warns that such razors can actually increase the likelihood of ingrown hairs. The mechanism is simple: the first blade raises the hair, allowing subsequent blades to cut it. However, this pulling effect can cause the hair to sink back into the skin, leading to irritation and ingrown issues.

To combat these problems, Dr. Ellis recommends switching to a single-blade razor. She emphasizes that this approach allows for a close shave while significantly reducing skin irritation. This advice goes against the grain of popular belief among many women who typically opt for multi-blade options due to their perceived efficiency. By advocating for a more traditional method, Dr. Ellis not only promotes healthier skin but also encourages users to rethink their shaving habits.

In addition to recommending single-blade razors, Dr. Ellis shares various techniques for minimizing post-shave irritation. One effective method is to shave after a warm shower or apply a hot, damp cloth beforehand. This practice helps to soften and swell the hairs, making them less likely to curl back under the skin after shaving. Furthermore, she suggests starting with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser to clear away dead skin and oils, which can clog hair follicles and exacerbate irritation.

Another important tip she provides is to always shave in the direction of hair growth. This step not only reduces the risk of ingrown hairs but also minimizes irritation, even if it doesn’t yield the smoothest finish. By focusing on light strokes rather than applying excessive pressure, users can avoid micro-cuts and inflammation, ultimately achieving a more comfortable shaving experience. Ensuring blade upkeep by replacing single-blade razors every five to seven uses also contributes to a better shaving routine, as dull blades can tug at the skin.

Rinsing the blade regularly during shaving is another vital technique she recommends to prevent clogging and pulling. After shaving, Dr. Ellis advises cooling the skin with cold water or a compress to close pores and soothe inflammation. Moreover, using a fragrance-free and alcohol-free moisturizer, or witch hazel for its astringent properties, can further assist in calming the skin post-shave. Gentle exfoliation two to three times a week with chemical or physical exfoliants can also help prevent hairs from becoming trapped.

Lastly, Dr. Ellis underscores the importance of giving the skin a break when bumps appear, allowing time for healing. Ingrown hairs usually clear up within about three months, making it essential to refrain from shaving until recovery. She also suggests avoiding tight clothing after shaving to prevent friction, further protecting delicate areas such as the bikini line and neck. Through these expert insights, Dr. Ellis provides a comprehensive approach to achieving smoother and healthier skin after shaving, encouraging users to adopt methods that prioritize skin health over mere aesthetics.
