Details on Stroke Complications Leading to Ethel Kennedy’s Death

Ethel Kennedy, the matriarch of the Kennedy family and widow of Robert F. Kennedy, passed away at the age of 96 on Oct. 10. She was the mother of 11 children, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was running for president in 2024 before suspending his campaign. Kennedy died from complications related to a stroke she suffered a week before her death, according to her grandson, Rep. Joe Kennedy III.

Ethel Kennedy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke while she was sleeping. Although the family did not specify the exact complications she faced, common complications of stroke can include brain swelling, pneumonia, seizures, ulcers, shoulder pain, and deep vein thrombosis. Treatment for these complications may involve medication, physical therapy, nutrition, and respiratory therapy.
