In the demanding world of heart surgery, precision is paramount, a truth embraced by Dr. Saurabh Gupta, a cardiovascular surgeon at the New Brunswick Heart Centre in Saint John, N.B. Gupta’s journey into this high-stakes field began far from the operating room, in Delhi, India, where he and his family made the pivotal decision to migrate to Canada when he was just 12 years old. His parents, an engineer and a homemaker, sought better opportunities and a higher quality of life for their son. Gupta attributes his professional success to his family’s sacrifices and the adventurous spirit inherent in their choice to uproot their lives for new beginnings.

Gupta emphasizes the significance of immigrant stories, advocating for curiosity and understanding about the reasons behind their moves. He highlights the unique experience of being welcomed in Canada, where kindness from fellow citizens fosters a sense of belonging. He believes that being Canadian allows individuals to pursue their identities and aspirations freely, marking a stark contrast to the challenges faced in their countries of origin. Through his own narrative, Gupta illustrates the deeper societal benefits of embracing and valuing the experiences of newcomers.

The City of Saint John is preparing for substantial immigration growth, aiming to welcome 22,500 newcomers by 2030. This influx is expected to bolster key sectors like healthcare, construction, technology, and business development. New Brunswick’s provincial government has raised its immigration target to over 4,200 permanent residents for the year, reflecting a concerted effort to attract talent for critical industries amid changing demographic trends. Mayor Donna Reardon underscores the importance of this growth, noting that previous trends of youth leaving the city for education will be countered by the arrival of young families through immigration, ensuring a vibrant future for the community.

In 2023, newcomers from 41 countries settled in Saint John, with India, Nigeria, and the Philippines representing the top sources. However, the transition to a new country poses numerous challenges, including language barriers, job recognition issues, and cultural adjustments. To aid in this process, the Saint John Newcomers’ Centre plays a crucial role, promoting community engagement and support systems that facilitate newcomers’ adaptation. Mohamed Bagha, managing director of the centre, advocates for a welcoming attitude toward newcomers, emphasizing that treating them with respect and friendliness is vital for their successful integration.

The latest Canadian census revealed that approximately eight percent of Saint John’s population consists of new Canadians. This demographic not only enriches the cultural fabric of the city but also contributes significantly to the local economy, accounting for ten percent of new business registrations in recent years. Bagha believes that helping immigrants align their skills with appropriate job opportunities can lead to mutual benefits for both newcomers and the broader community, fostering economic growth and diversity.

Ultimately, the tale of Dr. Gupta and the ongoing immigration narrative in Saint John encapsulates a broader theme of resilience and adaptation in the face of change. As the city prepares to welcome more diverse populations, the commitment to creating an inclusive environment ensures that both newcomers and long-term residents can work collaboratively to build a flourishing community. The emphasis on compassion, understanding, and opportunity reflects a hopeful outlook on the future of Saint John and the promise that comes with embracing a tapestry of cultures.
