The 2024 Reader’s Digest list, “Nicest Places in America,” crowned Provo, Utah as the top honor for its efforts to combat a mental health crisis impacting its youth. Despite the city’s relatively small population, Provo’s young people were experiencing alarming rates of suicide. In response to this crisis, the city established the Hope Squad, a peer-to-peer youth suicide prevention program. Since its inception, not a single student at Timpview High School, where the program started, has died by suicide. The success of the Hope Squad has led to its expansion to all 19 schools in the district, with the Utah legislature approving funding for any school in the state that wishes to start its own program.

In addition to Provo, other U.S. cities and towns were recognized for their community spirit and kindness. Butte, Montana was highlighted for the dedication of residents like 90-year-old Joyce O’Bill, who volunteers at the Butte Emergency Food Bank twice a week. Horseshoe Beach, Florida garnered praise for its residents who came together to help one another following the devastation caused by Hurricane Idalia in 2023. Despite the storm’s destruction, the community banded together to support each other, with residents opening their homes to those in need and coming together to rebuild.

The hip Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York was also featured for their annual Lay Out event at Fort Greene Park. The event, which takes place the Sunday before Juneteenth, allows attendees to shop for crafts and clothes or simply enjoy each other’s company. The Lay Out was born out of a group chat during the 2020 Black Lives Matter marches, highlighting the importance of community and togetherness. The event serves as an opportunity for Black residents to come together and support local Black-owned businesses while reclaiming space and fostering a sense of peace and resistance.

Overall, the Reader’s Digest list showcases the power of kindness, respect, and community spirit in various cities and towns across America. From the impactful suicide prevention efforts in Provo, Utah to the resilience and support seen in Butte, Montana and Horseshoe Beach, Florida, these stories highlight the importance of coming together in times of crisis and celebrating the strength of communities. The recognition of these places serves as a reminder of the positive impact that acts of kindness and compassion can have on individuals and communities as a whole.
