E! News Ends Its Run After Over 30 Years on Air

E! News, a staple of entertainment journalism for over 30 years, is set to conclude its linear TV broadcast, ending an era that began in 1991. Confirmation of its cancellation came from Us Weekly on July 24, with the final episode scheduled for September 25, 2023. Despite the end of the TV show, E! News will transition into a digital brand and maintain a presence online. In the interim, viewers can look forward to repeat episodes during the 11 p.m. slot on Thursdays, while new episodes are anticipated to stream shortly thereafter. A noteworthy development is the restructuring following NBCUniversal’s division into two companies—Peacock and Bravo retaining their prior attributes, while E! becomes part of the new entity named Versant. Some of E!’s correspondents might continue their careers within this new framework.

E! News’ legacy on the red carpet will persist with the program “Live With E!” while significant events like the Critics Choice Awards are scheduled to air on E! as late as January 2026. Additionally, the network’s digital offerings remain robust, extending to platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube with programs like “E! News’ The Rundown” and “RE!CAP.” Meanwhile, existing shows including Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind and Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour will continue broadcasting, alongside anticipated new releases such as Kimora: Back in the Fab Lane and E!’s Dirty Rotten Scandals.

E! News previously faced cancellation in 2020, only to resurface two years later. The current hosting duo of Keltie Knight and Justin Sylvester has yet to publicly comment on the show’s impending closure. Sylvester, in particular, has garnered attention, having recently filled in on Today With Jenna & Friends as a fan-favorite. Jenna Bush Hager, the main host of that show, has expressed her admiration for Sylvester, emphasizing their friendship and shared experiences, including plans to attend a Beyoncé concert together.

The timing of E! News’ cancellation aligns closely with other shifts in television programming, notably Stephen Colbert’s announcement that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will conclude in May 2026. Sharing this news with his audience during a July 17 taping, Colbert described the transition as significant for CBS, marking the end not just of his show but of the entire Late Show brand from the network. Describing the situation, Colbert conveyed his gratitude towards CBS as well as the audience, acknowledging their longstanding support.

These developments highlight a broader trend in television, particularly within entertainment journalism and late-night talk shows. The significant milestones in E!’s history and Colbert’s announcement signal potential shifts in audience engagement and content consumption habits. Both cancellations suggest a reevaluation of legacy programs as media platforms evolve in the digital age.

In summary, E! News will pivot towards a digital future, aiming to capture a new audience while maintaining its historical relevance. Its transition reflects a strategy to adapt to changing viewer preferences and the increasing significance of online platforms in entertainment. As programming continues to evolve, the landscape of entertainment journalism may see both challenges and opportunities, inviting fresh narratives and innovative content delivery methods to engage audiences.
