In a recent interview, Manfred Weber, the president of the European People’s Party (EPP), expressed concern over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s lack of interest in stopping the war in Ukraine. Weber mentioned that Putin seems to be playing to win time and gain an advantage on the battleground, while Ukraine is ready for peace. He highlighted that the Trump administration in the US now acknowledges Putin’s clear plan to conquer and occupy Ukraine. Despite a proposed ceasefire endorsed by both Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Putin only agreed to a partial ceasefire that fell short of expectations.
Weber emphasized the importance of European involvement in potential peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US. He stressed that Europe and Ukraine must have a seat at the table, as any agreement without their participation would not be valid. Weber urged EU leaders to act quickly to demonstrate that Europe can fulfill its responsibilities in the situation. The summit in Brussels focused on rearming Europe to ensure its military strength against potential aggression. The EU executive proposed freeing up funds for this purpose, including raising capital on EU markets to allocate €150 billion towards rearmament.
Weber pointed out that joint arms procurement among EU member states could save money while strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities. He suggested investing in flagship projects like cyber defense, missile defense systems, and drones defense systems to increase protection collectively. Weber, who is set to run unopposed for another term as president of the EPP, has consolidated power as the head of both the pan-European party and its European parliamentary group. Despite his confidence in the party’s strength and support, Weber acknowledged the unpredictability of politics.
The EPP president’s remarks underscore the need for European unity and solidarity in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
