European cities with the nearest airports

Short transfers from the airport to the city can make a big difference after a long flight. Some airports, despite their names, are located far away from the cities they serve, such as Paris-Vatry Airport, Munich West, and Frankfurt Hahn. However, there are cities with airports that are conveniently close to the city center, making for a quick and easy transfer. Cities like Gibraltar, Pisa, Tallinn, and Vilnius have airports that are just a few kilometers away from the city center, with efficient transportation options that are both affordable and convenient.

Gibraltar Airport, for example, is just 1.4 km away from the city center, and passengers can choose to take a bus for less than €2 or enjoy a short 15-minute walk crossing the airport’s runway. Similarly, Pisa International Airport is only 1.5 km from the central railway station, with a people mover shuttle service costing €6.50 one way. Tallinn Airport in Estonia is only 4 km from the historic center, and a bus or tram can take passengers there for just €2. In Vilnius, Lithuania, the airport is located just 5.9 km from the city center, with direct buses running every 10 minutes for as little as €0.65.

In addition to short distances to the city, some European airports have invested in efficient transportation links to ensure a quick transfer for passengers. Lisbon Airport, for example, is 10 km from the city center but offers a direct rail connection that can get passengers into the historic center in less than 20 minutes for just a few euros. Malaga Airport in Spain has a train station right outside the terminal building, with a 12-minute transfer into the city and connections to popular destinations like Fuengirola and Benalmadena. Zurich and Copenhagen also have rapid transfer times of 10 and 13 minutes, respectively, using train lines to reach the city center.

While it may be tempting to use rideshare services like Uber, European airports are working hard to make public transportation a cheap and accessible option for passengers. Using public transport not only reduces the environmental impact but also provides a more sustainable and less stressful transfer option. With airports located close to the city center and efficient transportation links in place, passengers can enjoy a smooth and convenient journey from the airport to their final destination, minimizing travel time and costs. Whether it’s a short walk, a quick bus ride, or a train transfer, these airports make the overall travel experience more enjoyable and hassle-free.
