One Tree Hill alums Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton Morgan, and Danneel Ackles are developing a sequel series to the beloved teen drama, prompting fans to wonder about the plot and which fan-favorite characters will return, with hopes of seeing Jana Kramer’s Alex Dupre. Despite never having shared scenes, Kramer and Burton Morgan have discussed the possibility of their characters meeting in the sequel series, leading fans to speculate on their potential interactions.
Kramer expressed uncertainty about the return of her character, Alex, in the sequel series, suggesting that it would depend on where the character is at in her journey. She believes Alex is “killing it” but acknowledges that it would ultimately be up to the creators to decide if she should come back.
Having joined the cast in season seven, Kramer’s character, Alex, stirred up drama in Tree Hill with her disruptive behavior, alcoholism, and self-image issues. Despite this, her character also underwent significant growth throughout the seasons. Kramer is pleased to see a new generation of fans discovering the show on streaming platforms, finding it relatable for various personal reasons.
Following allegations of inappropriate behavior by show creator Mark Schwahn, the news of the sequel series provides an opportunity for the female cast members to “own their history” and “reclaim their turf,” according to Bush. Kramer supports this sentiment, believing that the new show will bring joy and hope to fans while allowing them to stay connected with their beloved characters.
Kramer acknowledges the mixed reception that reboots often receive but believes that they allow fans to follow the trajectories of their favorite characters. She cites her love for “Sex and the City” as an example of a show that she enjoys watching until the end, appreciating the relatability and hope that such series provide to viewers.
While Bush confirmed that the OTH revival is still in development and not yet finalized, she expressed excitement about the ideas that have emerged from discussions with fans. The sequel series is being developed at Netflix with the support of Danneel and Jensen Ackles’ production company, Chaos Machine Productions. Director Emily Wilson, known for working with several OTH alums on Lifetime movies, is involved as a producer on the project.
