His establishment, which opened last month, is not only thriving with around 165 checks daily but is also preparing to launch a second location in the Financial District. Despite his heavy responsibilities, Sterling maintains a tight schedule, balancing classes at James Madison High School with his burgeoning business. After attending school from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., he dedicates his afternoons and evenings to the restaurant, often working until midnight or later. The early hours of the morning are reserved for schoolwork, challenging him to stay awake with merely three to four hours of sleep each night. Nevertheless, Sterling emphasizes that education remains a top priority for him, acknowledging that graduating is essential amidst his entrepreneurial aspirations.

Sterling’s remarkable work ethic stems from his experience as the captain of his high school basketball team. He draws parallels between being an athlete and running a business, indicating that teamwork and adaptability are crucial in both fields. His journey into entrepreneurship began serendipitously while working out at a local gym. He built a rapport with the owners of Poke Bowl United, who recognized his determination and offered him the chance to manage a new venture in Brooklyn. This opportunity allowed Sterling to develop Tacos Del Barrio, filling what he identified as a gap for quick-service Mexican cuisine.

To create a successful menu, Sterling dedicated considerable time to researching the restaurant industry, refining his ideas even if it meant sacrificing basketball practice. He devised a strategic approach that combined authenticity with innovative twists, inspired by his favorite taco spots. Sterling’s dedication is evident in unique dishes he developed, like corn ribs made from elote, displaying his flair for creativity.
