Far-right news site Gateway Pundit reaches settlement in defamation lawsuit filed by Georgia election workers in 2020

Gateway Pundit, a far-right conspiracy site, has settled a defamation lawsuit with two Georgia election workers who were falsely accused of rigging the 2020 election results. While details of the settlement were not disclosed, both parties have agreed to settle all claims and counterclaims in a court filing this week. This lawsuit is one of several defamation cases filed by Ruby Freeman and Shae Moss following the 2020 election. They recently won a case against ex-Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who was ordered to pay them $148 million in damages.

Gateway Pundit, known for its partisan and sensationalized content, frequently promotes baseless right-wing conspiracy theories. The website’s founder, Jim Hoft, is a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump. In April, the company attempted to declare bankruptcy due to the financial strain caused by the defamation cases related to the 2020 election. However, a federal judge ruled in July that the company was acting in bad faith and attempting to evade legal responsibilities through bankruptcy protection. Gateway Pundit is currently appealing this decision.

Despite settling the lawsuit with Gateway Pundit, Freeman and Moss are still pursuing Giuliani for the $150 million he owes them. Giuliani has not made any payments towards the debt, leading Freeman and Moss’s lawyers to seek various assets to collect on the judgement. They are attempting to seize Giuliani’s two multimillion-dollar apartments, his New York Yankees World Series rings, and his collection of luxury watches, some of which were gifts given to him after 9/11 by European heads of state. A hearing on the debt collection efforts is scheduled for next week in federal court in New York.

Freeman, Moss, and Giuliani are embroiled in a legal battle over the defamation case. The two election workers are seeking compensation for the false accusations made against them, with Giuliani being held accountable for his role in perpetuating the baseless claims. The settlement with Gateway Pundit marks a significant step in their pursuit of justice and restitution for the harm caused by the unfounded allegations. Despite the challenges they have faced in holding individuals and organizations accountable for their actions, Freeman and Moss remain determined to seek justice through the legal system.

The broader implications of this case highlight the impact of misinformation and conspiracy theories on individuals and institutions. Gateway Pundit’s involvement in spreading false claims about the 2020 election and targeting specific individuals has led to significant legal consequences for the site and its founder. The ongoing legal battles serve as a warning to other media outlets and individuals who engage in defamation and spreading of false information. Freeman and Moss’s pursuit of accountability sets a precedent for holding those responsible for damaging reputations through unsupported allegations and falsehoods.

As the legal proceedings continue, the outcome of the debt collection efforts against Giuliani will be closely monitored. The high stakes involved, with millions of dollars at stake, underscore the seriousness of the false accusations and the impact they have had on the individuals involved. The resolution of these cases will have far-reaching implications for the responsibility of media outlets and public figures in disseminating accurate information and the consequences of spreading misleading or harmful content. Ultimately, the pursuit of justice in this case represents a commitment to upholding the truth and holding individuals accountable for the harm caused by their actions.
