First Sri Lanka election since president ousted after economic collapse sees polls close

Sri Lanka has recently been facing economic difficulties, with Prime Minister Wickremesinghe implementing tax hikes and other measures as part of a US$2.9 billion IMF bailout. These actions have left millions of people struggling to make ends meet, leading to concerns about potential upheaval in the country. Despite this, voters are now faced with the decision of choosing a new leader in the upcoming election, with Wickremesinghe expected to lose to one of two main challengers.

One of the contenders is Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, the leader of a Marxist party that was involved in violent uprisings in the past. Dissanayaka has gained support by promising to change the corrupt political culture in Sri Lanka and has expressed confidence in securing the top job after the election. Another strong candidate is Sajith Premadasa, the son of a former president who was assassinated during the country’s civil war. Both Premadasa and Dissanayaka have pledged to fight against corruption and renegotiate the terms of the IMF rescue package.

The election is shaping up to be a three-way race, which is unprecedented in Sri Lanka’s history. Political analyst Kusal Perera believes that no candidate will reach the 50 percent mark needed to win outright, so officials will need to count second and third preference votes to determine the winner. Many voters are disillusioned with the current state of governance in the country and are hoping to send a strong message through their votes. The election has a total of 39 candidates, including one who passed away last month but remains on the ballot.

The crisis in Sri Lanka has given opposition leaders like Dissanayaka and Premadasa an opportunity to challenge the current government and present their vision for the country. Both candidates have focused on the need for a new political culture and have vowed to address issues of corruption and economic hardship. As the election approaches, there is uncertainty about the outcome, but it is clear that Sri Lanka’s voters are looking for a change in leadership that will address their concerns and improve their living conditions. Whichever candidate emerges as the winner will face the challenge of uniting a divided country and implementing the changes promised during the campaign.
