Authorities announced the arrests of three gang members in a massive check fraud conspiracy following a yearslong investigation that victimized 200 people and businesses in Polk County, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The investigation began in June 2022 when deputies responded to a call at a gas station leading to the search for Tyler Jacob, a convicted felon and member of the “Trap Boys” gang. Jacob was apprehended with a handgun, ammunition, fraudulent checks, altered checks, personal information of other people, debit cards, a computer, and a cell phone. The checks found with Jacob belonged to businesses that had reported fraud on their checking accounts and had been deposited into accounts associated with the debit cards, according to U.S. Attorney Mark Handberg.
Following a search warrant execution on Jacob’s computer, investigators discovered check-writing software and copies of fraudulent checks, revealing the extent of the conspiracy. The notebook found with stolen information belonging to deceased individuals, those in assisted living facilities, and mentally incompetent individuals indicated the vast scope of the crime. Another gang member, Jaquavious Green, was stopped on gun charges and found with blank checks, paperwork, and debit cards. Green, like Jacob, was a member of the “Trap Boys” gang. A similar situation occurred with a third gang member, Daquan Carey, who was arrested on murder charges following a shooting in Lake Wales. During Carey’s arrest, deputies found checks, credit cards, and a gun in his possession, indicating the larger operation at play.
Authorities believe Jacob and at least 19 other conspirators operated from July 2021 to November 2023 defrauding banks, credit unions, and businesses throughout central Florida. Known as the “Money Man” within the gang, Jacob had perfected the check fraud scheme and was teaching it to others. Sheriff Grady Judd stated that the “Trap Boys” gang has been disbanded, and efforts are underway to pursue their accomplices.
