Ford has been focusing on expanding its electric vehicle charging network by providing access to Tesla’s Supercharger network through NACS Fast Charging Adapters. The automaker has recently introduced new features, such as NACS Fast Charger Routing via Apple Maps in CarPlay and a second-generation NACS Fast Charging Adapter for its F-150 Lighting electric pickup and Mustang Mach-E SUV. Ford was the first automaker to announce support for the North American Charging System in 2023 and has now fulfilled its commitment by shipping around 140,000 complimentary adapters to reservation holders in the US, with nearly 20% of Ford EV charging visits happening at Tesla Supercharger stations.
The inclusion of Tesla’s V3 Superchargers has expanded Ford’s BlueOval Charge Network to approximately 44,000 DC fast charging points across North America. Drivers can now find and navigate to these stations through their vehicle’s on-board navigation, the FordPass app, and Apple Maps EV Routing. Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning drivers can now incorporate NACS fast charging stations into their trip plans using Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay, which calculates when to make charging stops based on the EV’s state of charge, including suggesting stops at Tesla Superchargers for longer trips.
Ford has also unveiled the second-generation NACS Fast Charging Adapter, co-developed with Lectron, which is more robust and reliable than the previous model. The new adapter features an integrated handle for better grip, vehicle interlock to prevent accidental unplugging during charging, and improved durability to withstand various conditions and abuses over the vehicle’s lifetime. Priced at $200, the new adapter is slightly cheaper than the previous version and is expected to be more readily available for purchase.
To test the durability of the new adapter, Ford conducted various tests, including exposing it to snow, water, impact, and even being crushed under an F-150 Lightning EV. The adapter passed these tests, showcasing its ability to withstand extreme conditions and potential abuses from owners. With the advancements in the NACS Fast Charging Adapter and the integration of Tesla Superchargers into Ford’s charging network, Ford is enhancing the charging experience for its EV drivers and making it easier for them to plan and execute long-distance trips with access to convenient and reliable charging stations.
