Former Billionaire’s Foundation Cancels Hundreds of College Scholarships

The Schuler Scholar Program, a nonprofit organization funded by former healthcare billionaire Jack Schuler, recently announced the abrupt cancellation of scholarships for 1,250 high school and college students, leaving many students in a state of panic. The cancellation of the $2,500 annual college scholarship has impacted students at various stages of their academic career, such as Leslie Barrera, a junior at the University of Rochester, who was taken by surprise and left distressed by the news.

The Schuler Scholar Program initially announced its shutdown in March, following significant financial challenges, resulting in the cancellation of scholarships that were promised to students. This decision was made despite previous commitments to provide financial aid to hundreds of students enrolled in college and in high school. The foundation’s director of college counseling issued an email to inform students about the cancellation of scholarships, along with the suspension of health insurance grants and emergency funds.

The timing of the announcement in July, during the summer break, has left many college students with few options to cover their tuition for the upcoming semester. Students from low-income families, who are the first in their families to attend college, relied heavily on Schuler’s funding. While the foundation suggested that students explore external scholarships and seek assistance from colleges’ financial aid offices, many students felt betrayed by the program and expressed disappointment in the abrupt withdrawal of support.

Forbes previously reported on the Schuler Education Foundation’s financial struggles, which stemmed from risky investments in volatile healthcare stocks, ultimately leading to a significant decline in assets. Former billionaire Jack Schuler, the foundation’s founder, continued to invest in healthcare stocks even as the foundation faced financial challenges. The foundation’s financial situation raised questions about its ability to fulfill scholarship commitments amid declining assets.

In response to the scholarship cancellation, some universities, such as Carleton College, have stepped in to cover the scholarships for affected students. However, the shift in financial aid may impact students’ college choices, as the program previously provided full scholarships only to students attending specific partner colleges. This change has forced students like Kaitlyn Apaez-Rodriguez to reconsider their college options, as they had been relying on the program’s promised financial support.

The impact of the Schuler Scholar Program’s closure extends beyond financial aid, as students lose access to a valuable network of support and resources built over two decades. The program’s sudden shutdown and withdrawal of scholarships have left students in limbo, with limited avenues for legal recourse due to the nature of charitable gifts. Students are left grappling with the repercussions of the foundation’s financial mismanagement and navigating uncertain paths forward as they seek to secure funding for their education.
