Former Liberal MP Han Dong has decided not to seek re-election after the party informed him that they would be running another candidate in his riding of Don Valley North. Dong, who had stepped away from the Liberal caucus in 2023 after allegations were made about his interactions with the Chinese consulate in Toronto, expressed disappointment at not being able to run in the upcoming contest. However, he did not want to split the vote in the safely Liberal riding and believed it was best for the party to have the strongest chance at winning.

Dong is currently suing Global’s parent company, Corus Entertainment, over the allegations made about his discussions with the Chinese consulate. The report claimed that Dong had advised the diplomat that releasing the two Canadians, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who were detained by Beijing, would benefit the opposition Conservatives. Dong has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and maintained that he has always advocated for the release of the two Canadians. He stated that he did not recall the specific conversation in question but emphasized his support for the Two Michaels.

Despite the allegations, a report submitted by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) to a public inquiry on foreign interference did not find evidence to support the claims made against Dong. Former Governor General David Johnston also refuted the allegations, stating that it was false that Dong had suggested the Two Michaels remain detained. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed interest in Dong rejoining the Liberal caucus and continuing his fight to clear his name. However, Dong never returned to the party benches and pursued legal action against the media outlet that published the allegations.

In June 2024, lawyers for Corus Entertainment attempted to have Dong’s lawsuit thrown out under a law preventing strategic lawsuits to limit free expression. However, an Ontario Superior Court judge rejected the application, stating that it was in the public interest to hear the case. Dong expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the residents of Don Valley North and learn from various community leaders and organizations throughout his time in office. The Liberal Party has chosen Maggie Chi as its candidate for the upcoming election on April 28, indicating that Dong will not be running for re-election.

Despite the challenges and controversies surrounding the allegations against him, Han Dong remains focused on clearing his name and continuing to advocate for his constituents. His decision to not seek re-election, in order to prevent splitting the vote, demonstrates his commitment to the Liberal Party’s success in the upcoming contest. The legal battle against Corus Entertainment highlights Dong’s determination to fight for his reputation and hold those responsible for spreading false accusations accountable. As he moves forward from his time in office, Dong remains grateful for the opportunity to serve his community and work alongside dedicated leaders and volunteers.
