Former NFLPA Executive Lloyd Howell Jr. Accused of Charging Union for Strip Club Visits: Report

Lloyd Howell Jr., the former Executive Director of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), recently resigned amid controversy regarding his expenses. An investigation revealed that Howell charged the union for visits to strip clubs, a choice that has drawn significant attention. Howell, who is 59 years old, was picked up from Fort Lauderdale International Airport on November 2, 2023, and later dropped off at Tootsie’s Cabaret, a well-known Miami strip club. This visit raised eyebrows when a finance employee’s inquiry revealed the establishment’s nature, and a driver was allegedly hired to wait for Howell during his prolonged stay of seven hours.

Notably, earlier this year, Howell also visited another strip club, Magic City, with two other NFLPA employees. The trip reportedly cost $2,426, which included expenses for two VIP rooms along with multiple cash withdrawals. Howell’s billing report categorized this outing as a “Player Engagement Event to support & grow our Union,” framing it as a professional activity, despite the questionable nature of the venue chosen.

The NFL Players Association has chosen not to comment on Howell’s actions; however, the financial expenditures have sparked widespread criticism and concern over ethical standards within the organization. Howell acknowledged in his resignation that his leadership had become a distraction from the important work of the NFLPA, prompting him to step down to allow the union to refocus on its priorities regarding player representation and well-being.

Howell was relatively new to the role, having been elected as union president in 2024, and he tendered his resignation voluntarily. His decision underscored an awareness of the potentially damaging impact of such controversies on the NFLPA’s mission, especially in light of the upcoming season. Howell’s resignation statement indicated a commitment to prioritizing the interests of the union’s members over personal ambition or leadership position.

In summary, Howell’s tenure, though brief, is now marred by incidents that have questioned the integrity of the NFL Players Association’s leadership. The implications of his actions extend beyond personal embarrassment; they raise significant questions about the organizational culture and ethical boundaries within the NFLPA. As the union aims to maintain focus on player advocacy, Howell’s resignation serves as a pivotal moment for potential reform and reflection on governance practices.

Overall, this matter serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining ethical standards, especially within organizations representing professional athletes. Howell’s departure may be seen as an opportunity for the NFLPA to reassess its leadership criteria and reinforce its commitment to member support and advocacy as it moves forward into a demanding sporting season.
