Veteran NFL receiver Diontae Johnson had a tumultuous 2023 season, suiting up for three different teams, including a brief and turbulent stint with the Baltimore Ravens. His time in Baltimore was marked by controversy as he faced a suspension after only four games. Recently, Johnson opened up about the circumstances that led to his suspension during an appearance on the “Sport and Suits” podcast. According to Johnson, the frigid weather during the Ravens’ Week 13 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles played a crucial role in his decision to refuse to enter the game when star receiver Rashod Bateman went down with an injury.

Johnson described the challenging conditions he faced on the sideline, highlighting the cold temperatures that made him hesitant to return to play. Although he acknowledged his experience in cold-weather games from his five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he allowed that he had mentally checked out. He felt that stepping back onto the field in such conditions could negatively impact his performance. Hence, when the coaches called for him, he told them he was not willing to go in. This decision ultimately resulted in his suspension for the Ravens’ Week 14 game and an immediate excuse from all team activities.

After his suspension, Johnson took a proactive stance by requesting his release from the team. He sensed that returning to practice would further jeopardize his standing with the coaching staff, as he would likely be seen as a player who didn’t perform under pressure. With this in mind, he decided to part ways with the Ravens. Shortly thereafter, he was picked up by the Houston Texans, signifying a new chapter in his career. However, his tenure with the Texans was equally brief, as he appeared in only one game before being waived.

In March 2024, Johnson was traded to the Carolina Panthers, but he soon found himself back in Baltimore midseason. After this second stint with the Ravens, he signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns during the offseason. Johnson now finds himself in a revamped receiving corps, where he aims to make an impact alongside Jerry Jeudy, among other players. Despite his challenges, Johnson remains focused on contributing positively to his new team.

Reflecting on his experiences and the cold weather in Cleveland, Johnson acknowledged a readiness to adapt. He indicated that he was trying not to dwell on the difficulties he faced in the past seasons. Acknowledging the mental and emotional trials he went through, he expressed optimism about moving forward with the Browns. His focus shifted towards integrating himself into the team’s dynamics and contributing to their success, though he remains cautious about the environmental factors he had previously encountered.

In summary, Diontae Johnson’s journey through difficult circumstances in the NFL illustrates the pressures players often face, both on and off the field. His candid discussions about mental health, decision-making during games, and the impact of weather conditions provide a window into the challenges NFL players navigate. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Cleveland Browns, Johnson seems eager to focus on performance and teamwork, hoping to turn the page on a tumultuous season and establish himself as a valuable asset to his new team.
