David McKinley, who began his career with the Fredericton Fire Department at the age of 25 in 1990, is set to retire after 35 impactful years. Reflecting on his decades of service, McKinley has tackled a myriad of challenges, including responding to fires, conducting ice rescues, and handling medical emergencies. His journey culminated in 2013 when he achieved the rank of assistant deputy chief, a position that he embraced with a profound sense of responsibility. McKinley articulated the weighty nature of his role, emphasizing the importance of progress and continuity within the department.

During his tenure, McKinley cultivated a legacy that resonates with both veteran and new firefighters, many of whom were not even born when he first joined. His approach is encapsulated in a personal motto: “work hard, keep your nose clean, stay out of trouble.” This ethos was highlighted at his retirement reception by Fire Chief Dwayne Killingbeck, who acknowledged the improvements McKinley has made to the department’s foundation and the trust he has placed in his colleagues to maintain this legacy.

As McKinley’s career nears its end, he is not quite ready to step away from the Fredericton Fire Department entirely. He is currently focused on writing a book that will document the department’s rich history, covering everything from the evolution of firefighting equipment to acknowledgment of the volunteers and firefighters who dedicated their lives to public service. McKinley underscored the significance of understanding the struggles faced by earlier generations of firefighters, as their hard work laid the groundwork for current and future efforts.

In addition to his ambitious literary project, McKinley has some immediate plans for retirement. Notably, his first priority is to indulge in some well-deserved rest, humorously stating, “The first thing I’m going to do is sleep in.” This reflects a common sentiment among retirees who often look forward to finally having time to relax after decades of dedicated service.

McKinley’s contributions extend beyond the technical aspects of firefighting. His leadership and commitment to the community have fostered an environment of teamwork and resilience within the department. He has not only been a mentor to many but has also played a vital role in shaping policies and practices that ensure the safety and effectiveness of the Fredericton Fire Department. As he departs, he leaves behind a stronger, more cohesive team ready to uphold the values he instilled.

In summary, David McKinley’s retirement marks the end of an era for the Fredericton Fire Department. His profound impact is reflected in the improved foundation of the department and the legacy he leaves behind. As he transitions into retirement, McKinley’s upcoming book will serve as a testament to the history and evolution of firefighting in Fredericton, reminding future generations of the dedication and sacrifices of those who came before them.
