At the 40th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, “Anora” took home the award for Best Feature, with director Sean Baker and lead Mikey Madison winning in their respective categories. “Shogun” was awarded Best New Scripted Series, while “Baby Reindeer” received three acting awards. “Dìdi” won the award for Best First Feature, and “Girls Will Be Girls” won the John Cassavetes Award for the best feature made for under $1,000,000.
Sean Baker was honored with the award for Best Director for his work on “Anora,” while Jesse Eisenberg won Best Screenplay for “A Real Pain” and Sean Wang was awarded Best First Screenplay for “Dìdi.” Mikey Madison took home the award for Best Lead Performance for her role in “Anora,” with Kieran Culkin winning Best Supporting Performance for “A Real Pain” and Maisy Stella receiving the award for Best Breakthrough Performance for “My Old Ass.” Jomo Fray won Best Cinematography for “Nickel Boys” and Hansjörg Weissbrich took home the award for Best Editing for “September 5.”
The Robert Altman Award was presented to the director, casting director, and ensemble cast of “His Three Daughters.” “No Other Land” was named Best Documentary, while “Flow” from Latvia, France, and Belgium was awarded Best International Film. The Producers Award was given to emerging producer Sarah Winshall, and the Someone to Watch Award was presented to filmmaker Sarah Friedland for “Familiar Touch.” The Truer Than Fiction Award went to Rachel Elizabeth Seed for “A Photographic Memory.”
In the non-scripted and documentary categories, “Hollywood Black” was awarded Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series, while “Shogun” took home the award for Best New Scripted Series. Richard Gadd won Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series for “Baby Reindeer,” with Nava Mau winning Best Supporting Performance and Jessica Gunning receiving the award for Best Breakthrough Performance for the same series. The award for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series went to “How to Die Alone.”
