Gov. Newsom and Protesters Confront JD Vance During Family Visit to Disneyland

This weekend, Vice President JD Vance visited Disneyland with his family, igniting protests in Southern California. The presence of Vance, who has been criticized for his hardline immigration policies, attracted around 100 to 150 demonstrators outside the park. California Governor Gavin Newsom also joined the chorus of criticism, sharing a post on social media that highlighted the potential harm Vance’s policies could inflict on families, stating, “Hope you enjoy your family time, @JDVance. The families you’re tearing apart certainly won’t.” This public denunciation set the tone for the protests, as demonstrators expressed their outrage over recent immigration raids and policies reportedly affecting immigrant families.

Vance’s visit came shortly after two significant ICE raids in Ventura County, which resulted in the detention of approximately 200 undocumented immigrants. The aftermath of these raids was marked by tragedy, with reports of one death and several serious injuries, as well as individuals still unaccounted for. Against this backdrop, protesters gathered at Disneyland, holding signs and waving Mexican flags, a clear demonstration of their discontent with the Vice President’s actions and policies. The protests not only targeted Vance but also aimed to shed light on the broader immigration issues affecting communities in the area.

Local Democratic leaders openly supported the protests, with Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento expressing anger over Vance’s visit, labeling it inconsiderate amid the suffering caused by federal immigration policies. Sarmiento remarked that families are being “terrorized” by these policies, indicating the emotional toll on communities affected by enforcement actions. This sentiment resonated among many of the protesters, who felt that Vance’s leisurely outing was tone-deaf to the struggles that immigrant families are facing as a result of his administration’s actions.

In contrast, some local Republicans suggested a different approach, advocating for dialogue instead of confrontation. Orange County Republican colleague Don Wagner emphasized that rather than protesting, there should be conversations about the complexities of immigration enforcement. Wagner proposed that this situation might serve as an opportunity for engagement, especially considering questions raised about ICE operations in nearby areas. His stance highlights a divide in the political response to Vance’s policies, with some urging for more conversation and understanding rather than hostility.

The Vice President’s family trip was characterized as a private visit, devoid of any political activities. Despite this assertion, the timing and location of the trip inevitably connected it to the recent immigration controversies simmering in the region. Vance, along with his wife Usha and their children, flew into John Wayne Airport on Friday, earlier in the day when Second Lady was involved in community outreach at Camp Pendleton. This juxtaposition of family leisure and significant political tensions set the stage for heightened scrutiny during their visit.

As Vance and his family enjoyed the attractions at Disneyland, a significant security detail accompanied them, which was visible to park patrons. Amidst their activities, video footage captured Vance at locations within the park, underscoring the contrast between a family day out and the political storm brewing outside its gates. The combination of local protests, political commentary, and ongoing immigration challenges has rendered this weekend a focal point in the broader national conversation about immigration policy, illustrating the real-world implications that political decisions have on families across America.
