Kevin Costner’s film, Horizon: An American Saga, has faced significant challenges at the box office since its release. The film made $2.4 million this past weekend, landing it at No. 7 on the charts. This is a decrease from its opening weekend, where it earned $11 million domestically. Despite Costner’s efforts to create a four-part Western epic, the first chapter of Horizon has struggled to attract audiences.
Following its disappointing box office performance, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is set to premiere on premium video on demand on July 16. Additionally, the planned release of Chapter 2 has been postponed. The decision to pull the film from its August 16 release date in theaters was made jointly by Costner’s production company, Territory Pictures, and the distribution partner, Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line Cinema.
Costner, who wrote, directed, and starred in Horizon, put $38 million of his own money into the project, with additional funding from private investors. While the production budget for Horizon 1 has been reported as $50 million by The Numbers, other sources suggest a larger budget of $100 million for both the first and second chapters. Costner and his investors are also covering the film’s $30 million prints and advertising budget.
Despite its struggles in the box office, Horizon has had limited success internationally. The film has only earned $1.4 million in international ticket sales, bringing its worldwide total to $28.4 million. Additionally, the film’s critical reception has been mixed, with a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 71% Audience Score. However, the film may find success through PVOD, where it is priced at $24.99 for purchase and $19.99 for rental.
Kevin Costner’s ambitious Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga, has faced setbacks in its journey to the big screen. The film’s lackluster performance at the box office has cast doubt on the future of the project. Despite Costner’s significant personal investment in the film, it has struggled to recoup its production costs and attract a wide audience. However, the film’s upcoming release on PVOD may provide a glimmer of hope for Horizon’s success in the digital market.
