House Democrats are planning a “Day of Action” to push back against what they describe as a “diabolical Republican scheme to enact the largest Medicaid cut in our nation’s history” following the passing of a stopgap spending bill by Congress. The Senate voted 54-46 to approve the bill, with Sen. Rand Paul being the only Republican to oppose it. Most Democrat senators also opposed the bill, but it was ultimately passed with the help of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Independent Sen. Angus King. The bill will maintain spending levels from fiscal year 2024 until Oct. 1.
The passing of the spending bill averted a potential government shutdown, as President Donald Trump supported the bill and urged lawmakers to pass it. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the bill, calling it an attack on veterans, families, seniors, and everyday Americans. He emphasized the importance of working together in the face of the ongoing Republican assaults on the economy, healthcare, the social safety net, and veterans benefits. Jeffries also expressed determination to resist efforts to divide Democrats and protect the American people from harmful policies.
In response to the passing of the spending bill, House Democrats are organizing a “Day of Action” across the country to combat the perceived Republican threat to Medicaid. Jeffries emphasized the need for unity and collaboration among Democrats at all levels of government, as well as with various other organizations and concerned citizens. He highlighted the diverse nature of the Democratic party as a coalition rather than a cult and stressed the shared goal of improving the lives of everyday Americans and countering the detrimental actions of President Trump, Elon Musk, and House Republicans.
The Senate’s approval of the continuing resolution, following a procedural vote that overcame a filibuster with the help of Chuck Schumer, has raised questions about confidence in the Senate Minority Leader within the Democratic party. Jeffries has not openly addressed these inquiries, focusing instead on the broader goal of opposing harmful legislation and protecting the interests of the American people. The efforts to push back against cuts to Medicaid and other Republican initiatives demonstrate the determination of House Democrats to resist divisive tactics and prioritize the well-being of citizens across the nation.
