Inside Israel’s Covert Operations in Iran: Mossad Commandos, Stealth Drones, and the Strike That Astonished Tehran

Israel’s recent operation against Iran, codenamed “Am Kelavi” (Rising Lion), marked a significant escalation in hostilities between the two nations. This ambitious aerial campaign, involving dozens of fighter jets, was meticulously pre-planned over years by Israeli intelligence and military forces. Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, was instrumental, coordinating efforts with the Israeli air force and military intelligence to conduct a comprehensive strike on Iran’s critical military and nuclear infrastructure. This operation illustrates not only Israel’s capabilities in intelligence gathering and military precision but also its strategic determination to dismantle potential nuclear threats from Iran.

The groundwork for Operation Am Kelavi involved deep penetration of Iranian territory by Mossad agents, some of whom were re-trained as commando operatives for critical missions. A senior Israeli security official disclosed that the operation had a three-layered approach aimed at neutralizing key military assets. This entailed destroying a significant portion of Iran’s missile defenses, targeting senior scientists, and crippling surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile infrastructures. One of the crowning achievements was the establishment of a drone base within Iran, which allowed for real-time intelligence collection and precision strikes on targets during the operation.

The principal target of the strikes was the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, a crucial site in Iran’s nuclear ambitions located about 1,500 kilometers from Israel. Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin emphasized the extensive damage inflicted on this underground compound. Analysts like Avner Golov noted that an essential aspect of the Israeli success lay in intercepting Iran’s initial retaliation, thereby neutralizing their response capabilities. The operation not only disrupted Iran’s military readiness but also diminished their ability to develop nuclear weapons, which has long been a point of contention between Israel and Iran.

Concurrently, a large-scale intelligence and sabotage operation was being executed within Iran. A former senior Israeli official remarked on the unprecedented level of intelligence work, highlighting the opportunity to strike at the command center of the Iranian Air Force during a drill that had inadvertently gathered the top brass in one location. This real-time intelligence facilitated precise targeting that dismantled Iranian leadership amidst a show of deterrence, a tactic reminiscent of previous Israeli operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. The execution of these strikes exemplifies the advanced operational capabilities of Israeli forces, showcasing successful elements of surprise and timing.

The operation transcended mere aerial bombardment; it involved a high degree of integration between intelligence and military practices. The meticulous planning included smuggling high-tech weaponry into Iran and placing precision-guided systems near military targets. Notably, disguised vehicles were employed effectively to disable Iranian air defenses, while explosive drones were used to target missile launchers. Israeli officials have since lauded this operation as one of the most successful integrations of military and intelligence efforts in the country’s history, asserting that such operational reach sends a clear deterrent message to adversaries.

In summary, Operation Am Kelavi signifies a leap in Israel’s military strategy, underpinned by years of intelligence-gathering efforts and sophisticated planning. The operation not only dealt a crucial blow to Iran’s military capabilities but also demonstrated Israel’s resilience and adaptability in facing existential threats. The clear implication is that no area is beyond the reach of Israeli military operations, highlighting both the capabilities and resolve of the nation to protect its interests against perceived threats. As tensions in the region continue to simmer, the repercussions of this operation will likely resonate throughout the geopolitical landscape, influencing both future military strategies and diplomatic engagements involving Israel and Iran.
