Italy has recently unveiled an exciting new travel option: the sleeper “beer train” that connects Rome to Munich specifically for Oktoberfest festivities. Known as the Munich Express or Espresso Monaco, this train is operated by FS Treni Turistici Italiani, the state-owned railway company. It promises a jovial 16-hour journey filled with traditional Bavarian fun, where passengers can revel in dancing, dining, and beer right from the moment they board. FS Treni emphasizes that this journey eliminates the stress of driving, allowing travelers to kick off the festivities as soon as they step onto the train.
On board, guests can enjoy an assortment of traditional Bavarian snacks along with fresh draft beer while listening to lively Bavarian music. The train offers a range of accommodations, including couchettes, seats, and sleeping cars, ensuring a comfortable experience for everyone. For families or groups, there are options for double or single cabins, as well as four-berth sleeper arrangements. The scenic journey also takes passengers through picturesque cities including Florence, Verona, Bologna, and the breathtaking Alps, making the trip not just convenient but visually stunning.
Service on the Munich Express is set to run on two specific dates: September 26 and October 3, with departures scheduled from Rome’s Termini station at 8 PM every Friday. The train arrives in Munich at 2:30 PM the following day, while return journeys are available on Sundays at 2:30 PM, ensuring that travelers can enjoy the Oktoberfest atmosphere and return to Rome by 6:30 AM on Monday. This convenient schedule promises to enhance the Oktoberfest experience for those eager to partake in the celebrations.
In addition to travelers originating from Rome, day travelers from several other Italian cities—such as Trento, Verona, and Bolzano—can also join on this festive route. The fares for the Munich Express Oktoberfest special start at €99 one way; however, travelers booking a round trip benefit from a reduced rate of €89 per journey. Reservations can be easily made through Railbook, making it a hassle-free way to secure a spot on this unique train ride.
Despite efforts to promote travel to Munich’s Oktoberfest, recent trends show that some vacationers are opting out of the crowded celebrations in favor of the “Berliner Oktoberfest.” According to research by online travel agency Thomas Cook, there’s been a marked shift towards Berlin for Oktoberfest, as many travelers find the atmosphere more affordable and accessible than the international festivities in Munich. This adjustment reflects changing consumer preferences as people seek to balance cultural experiences with cost-effectiveness.
Interestingly, while travelers may be avoiding the crowds in Munich, they are not skimping on accommodations. Many are opting for luxurious four and five-star hotels during their stays, indicating a desire for high-quality experiences even as they seek out more cost-efficient ways to enjoy the Oktoberfest spirit. Nicholas Smith, Holidays Digital director at Thomas Cook, notes that this year’s traveler interest in Berlin reflects a blend of traditional Bavarian experiences with modern travel preferences, showcasing an evolution in how people engage with cultural events like Oktoberfest.
