Iranian Sleeper Cells Could Be Concealed ‘in Plain Sight’ While Targeting Rural Areas in the US, Expert Warns

A counterterrorism expert, Jonathan Gilliam, has raised alarm about the potential presence of Iranian sleeper cells in the United States, particularly in rural areas. Following recent U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, the Department of Homeland Security issued a National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin. This bulletin highlighted an increased risk of Iranian-backed or domestic terrorism, especially if Iranian leadership calls for retaliatory violence against the U.S. Gilliam emphasized the danger of these sleeper cells existing “in plain sight,” suggesting that the threat may be closer to home than many realize.

Gilliam detailed how the current U.S. border policies have facilitated the entry of Iranian immigrants into the country. He criticized the Biden administration for allowing individuals to seek asylum rather than holding them for vetting. This policy, according to him, creates an environment conducive to the establishment of sleeper cells, where individuals may infiltrate communities unnoticed. He argued that many could enter the country under the guise of seeking refuge, complicating the identification and monitoring of these potential threats.

In light of tensions following the military strikes, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intensified its enforcement against Iranian nationals. Reports indicate that over 130 Iranians were arrested since June 18, with around 670 currently in ICE custody. This crackdown aims to mitigate the increased risks associated with Iranian sleeper cells, as tensions rise between Iran and the U.S. Gilliam warns that these groups may capitalize on less protected rural areas, choosing targets based on vulnerability rather than urban density.

He pointed out that previous attacks by fundamentalist groups in other regions, such as recent events in Israel and India, show a pattern of targeting less fortified locales. By shifting focus away from larger cities, these sleeper cells might exploit rural environments, potentially striking places like outdoor entertainment venues or vacation spots. This tactic could maximize impact while minimizing the likelihood of immediate law enforcement response.

Gilliam’s insights bring forth a critical discussion on national security and the steps needed to strengthen vigilance against potential threats. There is a growing need for heightened awareness and protective measures, especially in areas that may be seen as softer targets. As the geopolitical landscape shifts, it becomes imperative for both government agencies and local communities to remain alert to prevent any emerging threats from manifesting into attacks.

In conclusion, the warning regarding Iranian sleeper cells underscores an urgent need for vigilance in the U.S., particularly in rural areas. The situation calls for a reevaluation of immigration policies and national security strategies to better identify and mitigate such threats. With the potential for increased terrorist activity, proactive measures must be implemented to ensure the safety of all communities, regardless of their size or location.
