Kenya has been reeling from a series of femicides, with many women suffering physical and sexual abuse, including brutal murders at the hands of their partners or male family members. Success in sports, particularly among female athletes, has made them targets for violence, as some men are threatened by their achievements and seek to control their earnings. The death of elite long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who was murdered by her ex-partner after returning from the Olympics, shed light on the dangers faced by successful women in East Africa.

The high altitude training grounds in Kenya’s Rift Valley, where many elite athletes train, have also been the backdrop for tragic incidents of violence against female runners. Agnes Tirop, a world-record holder in long-distance running, was stabbed to death by her husband and coach, highlighting the vulnerability of female athletes to abuse from male partners. Despite the success and fame that these women achieve in their sporting careers, they continue to face emotional and physical violence from men who feel threatened by their achievements.

The lack of accountability for perpetrators of violence against women in Kenya has been a major issue, with many murders going unsolved and culprits escaping justice. Women’s rights activists are calling for stronger legal measures to address femicide, including speeding up murder trials and holding perpetrators accountable. The government and law enforcement agencies have been criticized for their slow response to cases of violence against women, contributing to a culture of impunity for male perpetrators.

Athletics Kenya, the organization overseeing the country’s athletes, has come under scrutiny for not providing adequate support and protection for female athletes facing abuse. There is a call for education and training within the sports community to raise awareness about the signs of abuse and provide a safe space for women to seek help. Women’s rights groups are advocating for the creation of more government-run shelters and rescue centers to provide support and protection for survivors of violence.

Despite the challenges and risks faced by female athletes in Kenya, there are initiatives like Tirop’s Angels that aim to support women and girls in abusive situations. These organizations offer financial and emotional support to survivors of abuse, highlighting the resilience and determination of women in the face of adversity. By raising awareness and advocating for stronger legal protections, activists are working towards a safer and more supportive environment for women in sports and beyond.

As the cases of femicide continue to rise in Kenya, there is a growing awareness of the systemic problem of violence against women in the country. Media coverage and monitoring groups like Femicide Count are shedding light on the prevalence of femicide and the need for urgent action to protect women from violence. While the challenges are immense, there is a sense of determination among activists and advocates to fight for justice and accountability for victims of gender-based violence.
