LA Protests: Images Capture Waymo Cars Ablaze Amid Riots

Protests erupted in downtown Los Angeles for a second consecutive night, driven by widespread anger over recent immigration enforcement raids. Starting Friday and escalating throughout the weekend, the demonstrations attracted thousands of participants. Tensions surged further following President Donald Trump’s announcement to dispatch 2,000 California National Guard troops to assist with the enforcement efforts—an action that Governor Gavin Newsom opposed. The initial catalyst for the protests was an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid at a clothing warehouse in the Fashion District, where officials alleged that the employer had utilized fake documentation for workers.

As ICE agents conducted arrests, demonstrators attempted to impede their operations. The unrest quickly expanded to nearby areas like Paramount and Compton, prompting protestors to gather outside federal buildings where they believed detainees were being held. In a controversial move, President Trump ordered that the National Guard be placed under federal command to “address the lawlessness” caused by the protests, effectively circumventing the state’s authority. The troops were meant to support ICE rather than engage directly in law enforcement, but their deployment significantly heightened tensions in the already charged environment.

Property damage occurred as some protestors vandalized vehicles, including several autonomous Waymo taxis. These vehicles were set ablaze in the vicinity of Pershing Square, while other properties, including a local news van, were also targeted. Video footage captured scenes of chaos, including the deployment of tear gas by law enforcement near the Metropolitan Detention Center, leading to confrontations between federal troops and protesters. The situation represented one of the most robust uses of National Guard troops in a U.S. city in recent history, highlighting the escalating divide between federal actions and state-level governance concerning immigration and public safety.

Defending its enforcement actions, the Trump administration stated that the operation was aimed at capturing undocumented individuals with outstanding deportation orders or criminal backgrounds. The ICE undertook a coordinated citywide sweep that initiated late Thursday. In his communication about the National Guard’s deployment, Trump criticized both Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, suggesting that the federal government would intervene when local leadership fell short in managing the unrest. His statements on social media indicated a hardened stance against the opposition faced in California’s immigration enforcement policies.

City officials have expressed their concerns over the potential for further protests, warning local residents to avoid public areas due to escalating tensions. Mayor Bass characterized the government’s enforcement actions as triggering a “sense of terror” within vulnerable communities. The fear of unpredictability in public safety is palpable among residents, who are increasingly uncertain about where they can safely assemble or go about their daily lives. The potential for continued unrest looms, as community feedback shows increasing anxiety regarding the rising tensions between federal authorities and local governance.

Waymo, which had been operating a pilot program for self-driving cars in the area, has acknowledged the damage incurred during the protests and is cooperating with law enforcement for further investigation. A spokesperson mentioned ongoing communication with authorities regarding the vandalism, highlighting the ripple effects of the unrest that have now impacted local businesses and infrastructures. Overall, the demonstrations reflect broader societal tensions surrounding immigration, state versus federal authority, and community safety, illustrating the complex dynamics at play in contemporary American society.
