Laverne Cox Calls ‘Clean Slate’ Cancellation a Heartbreaking Blow: ‘I’m Still Processing It’

Laverne Cox recently opened up about the emotional toll following the cancellation of her Amazon Prime Video series, “Clean Slate,” which she described as akin to a “dagger to [her] heart.” The actress, who co-created and produced the show, shared her deep sense of loss and heartbreak upon learning about the cancellation just weeks before the announcement. “Clean Slate” centered on Desiree, a 40-year-old trans woman returning to her hometown to confront her estranged father about her identity. This project was especially significant for Cox, as it was loosely based on her own experiences and represented her first scripted television endeavor.

Despite the cancellation feeling like a personal defeat, Cox expressed gratitude for the supportive fans who embraced the series’ inclusive message. She highlighted the joy of connecting with viewers, many of whom resonated with the show’s characters. Fans from various backgrounds expressed their appreciation, which brought her some comfort amid the disappointment. Cox emphasized the impact of “Clean Slate,” stating that the show had succeeded in making people laugh and think. She remains hopeful about possibly finding a new platform for the series, showing a willingness to shop the show elsewhere.

Cox also reflected on the broader implications of her show’s cancellation, recognizing it as part of a larger conversation about representation in media. As one of the first trans stars in a comedy, she acknowledged the political climate that can negatively affect such groundbreaking projects. It is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by artists advocating for visibility and inclusivity in a complex environment, adding sadness to the loss of a show that sought to affirm underrepresented voices.

Looking toward the future, Cox shared her ambition to tackle more challenging roles that push her artistic boundaries. Her experience in comedy has sparked a desire for transformation and depth in her performances. She mentioned upcoming projects, including an animated remake of “Animal Farm,” where she will lend her voice to the character Snowball, as well as a film titled “Outcome” alongside Keanu Reeves. Her enthusiasm for future endeavors indicates a readiness to explore new creative opportunities and redefine her artistic identity.

Cox is also contemplating drastic career shifts, including the possibility of playing a male character to fully immerse herself in a role that allows her to step outside her well-known public persona. This desire to “disappear” into a character reflects her commitment to the craft of acting and showcases her willingness to break boundaries. She hopes that her future projects will invite audiences to view her talent fresh, devoid of preconceptions.

In addition to her acting career, Cox made headlines earlier this year by stepping away from her role in E!’s red carpet coverage after a fruitful three-year tenure. Through social media, she expressed her gratitude for the experience and the support she received during that time. This transition marks a significant change in her career landscape, as Cox seeks new paths that resonate more deeply with her evolving artistic vision. Ultimately, she aims to engage in projects that challenge her while continuing to promote inclusivity and understanding within the entertainment industry.
