In situations of carjacking, a vehicle is stolen from the driver using force, threats, or intimidation while the owner is still in the car. This can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation. Sergeant Diogo Mello from the East Providence Police Department offered safety tips on what to do if you find yourself in a carjacking situation and preventative measures you can take to protect yourself. It is important to remain calm and not resist or be combative towards the carjacker, as this can put you in more danger. Cooperating and separating yourself from the carjacker and the car is essential. Gathering as much information about the suspect as possible can help law enforcement with identification later on.

Preventative measures for carjacking include always being aware of your surroundings. Staying vigilant is crucial to avoid becoming a victim, especially in today’s distracted world. Keeping windows up and doors locked, avoiding driving alone, leaving enough room to maneuver around other cars, parking in well-lit areas, and utilizing tracking or GPS software built into newer vehicles can help prevent carjackings. If your car does not have a tracker, you can purchase an inexpensive one to add an extra layer of security. It is important to avoid placing the tracker in obvious spots like the glove box or center console, as these are the first places criminals check for valuables.

Certain risk factors can make individuals more vulnerable to carjackings, such as neglecting to lock your vehicle, leaving it running while stopped, and driving certain makes, models, or values of cars. Carjackings tend to occur more frequently in places like shopping plazas, garages, convenience stores, and gas stations. Parking in well-lit areas closest to the business’s entrance can deter criminals since they are less likely to act if they know there are witnesses. The timing of day can also increase the risk of carjackings, with most incidents happening late at night or in the early hours of the morning from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Being aware of your surroundings and trusting your instincts can go a long way in preventing carjackings. It is important to remain vigilant and avoid distractions, especially from cell phones while driving or walking. Tips for staying safe include always being aware of your surroundings, keeping windows up and doors locked, avoiding driving alone, leaving enough room to maneuver, parking in well-lit areas, and utilizing tracking or GPS software. By taking these preventative measures and being cautious in high-risk areas, you can reduce the likelihood of falling victim to a carjacking.

If you ever find yourself in a carjacking situation, remaining calm and not resisting the carjacker is important for your safety. It is crucial to separate yourself from the carjacker and the vehicle, while also gathering as much information about the suspect as possible to help law enforcement in their investigation. Avoid resisting the carjacker’s demands, except in situations where they try to force you into the vehicle, as this is unlikely to end well. By following these safety tips and being proactive in preventing carjackings, you can better protect yourself and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of this dangerous crime.
