A Young Entrepreneur’s Tribute to Veterans

In a remarkable display of entrepreneurship and patriotism, an 18-year-old Long Island teen, Will Burrell, has launched Will’s Smashburgers, a unique burger business that not only offers free meals to veterans but also allocates a portion of its earnings to support current military personnel and their families. Burrell’s initiative stems from a deep respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made by veterans, famously stating, “These veterans are sacrificing their lives so that we can put stuff together like this.” His commitment to honor both veterans and active military personnel is a cornerstone of his business philosophy, reflecting a maturity beyond his years.

Burrell’s journey into the culinary world began during a transformative experience at a military-style boot camp known as Camp Spartan in Vermont. It was here he connected with former service members and learned about the significant sacrifices they make. This experience fostered his desire to give back to the community, specifically to those who protect it. His venture officially kicked off during a fundraising event at his Greenwich, Connecticut high school, where he raised $1,500 for the Gary Sinise Foundation, demonstrating an early commitment to charitable contributions. This fundraising success paved the way for Burrell to secure a prime location within Center Cuts Gourmet Butcher shop, where he enthusiastically began crafting his signature smash burgers.

Beyond just serving burgers, Burrell aims to create a restaurant culture that emphasizes positivity and community. At his kitchen inside Center Cuts, he affectionately leaves handwritten notes like “strive to inspire” with each customer’s order. His approach to business is refreshingly altruistic; he believes in the importance of doing the right thing over merely pursuing profit. His willingness to invest in the community by purchasing picnic tables for customers and collaborating with local figures, such as New York Islanders forward Kyle Palmieri, only amplifies his mission. Palmieri has expressed interest in working with Burrell’s initiative to further support veterans, highlighting the growing recognition of Burrell’s noble cause.

Burrell’s culinary creativity shines through not only in the taste of his burgers but also in their preparation. He emphasizes the balance of flavors and techniques, like caramelizing onions and using a special sauce that combines ketchup, mustard, and even pickle juice for an extra kick. He has crafted a menu that includes intriguing offerings such as “The Green Beret”—an extravagant smashed burger topped with lobster and warm butter. Burrell’s philosophy that “nobody told us not to” when it came to adding his unique lobster topping embodies the spirit of innovation that drives his business.

As word spreads about Will’s Smashburgers, the teen is quickly gaining local acclaim, and community support has blossomed. Patrons appreciate not only the quality of food but also Burrell’s dedication to giving back. He is already seeing the fruits of his labor, with plans for expansion and collaborations with local businesses for events. His celebrity clientele, which includes athletes and local personalities, is indicative of the traction his burger business is gaining. Burrell’s philosophy, saying, “I’m super grateful for our veterans … we live in the greatest country on the planet,” resonates with the community and has cultivated a loyal following.

Looking ahead, Burrell is not just stopping at burgers. His encounters with veterans at Camp Spartan have inspired him to pursue an ROTC program once he enters college, with aspirations for a career in the Army. This ambition reveals a commitment to public service that aligns seamlessly with his entrepreneurial efforts. While he continues to refine his burger-making skills and foster community relationships, Burrell remains steadfast in his mission to celebrate and support the military community, making his future endeavors in both civilian and military life excitingly intertwined.
