The acting police commissioner has expressed strong condemnation of a violent incident involving two female police officers in Sydney, following an alleged attack on them by a 19-year-old man. The confrontation occurred late on a Friday afternoon, around 6:30 PM, after the officers were dispatched to Bunya Road in Bidwill to respond to a mental health crisis. Reports indicated that the man was lying in the street, prompting police intervention aimed at ensuring his safety and the safety of the community.
As the officers attempted to engage with the young man, the situation rapidly deteriorated. In a sudden burst of aggression, he reportedly kicked one of the officers—a 23-year-old woman—in the stomach and then punched her in the face, rendering her unconscious. A second officer, aged 22, attempted to defuse the situation but was also met with violence; she was punched in the face while trying to use capsicum spray for self-defense. The severity of the attack underscored the risks that law enforcement personnel encounter while fulfilling their duties.
After the violent exchange, additional officers were called to the scene and successfully apprehended the assailant. Acting NSW Police Commissioner Peter Thurtell described the incident as “sickening” and emphasized that attacks on police officers are entirely unacceptable. He noted that such violence not only impacts the officers involved but also erodes community trust in law enforcement. Thurtell highlighted the dedication and courage of officers who routinely put themselves at risk to maintain public safety and assert that they deserve respect rather than aggression.
Paramedics were quick to respond, providing immediate medical assistance to the injured officers. The officer who was knocked out was transported to Westmead Hospital in stable condition, while her colleague received treatment for minor injuries at the scene before being taken to Mount Druitt Hospital for precautionary measures. The 19-year-old suspect was subsequently taken into custody at Mount Druitt Police Station before being transported to Nepean Hospital for assessment.
