Map Reveals Cities with Highest Rates of Dog Bites on USPS Workers

In 2024, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) reported significant concerns about dog bites involving mail carriers, with a notable escalation in incidents across various cities. The distribution of dog bite cases prompted the USPS to release a comprehensive list of urban areas where the highest numbers of attacks were recorded. Topping the list is Los Angeles, which saw 77 incidents, followed closely by Houston with 65 and Chicago with 57. This alarming trend emphasizes the need for increased awareness and proactive measures to protect postal workers.

The implications of these dog attacks are substantial, as the USPS disclosed that over 6,000 dog-related incidents affected employees in the previous year alone. In response, the postal service initiated a National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign aimed at educating dog owners about the importance of ensuring their pets are secure during mail deliveries. The agency stresses that not only can dog bites result in serious injuries to carriers, but they also carry potential financial repercussions for dog owners, including exorbitant medical bills and lost wages resulting from related injuries.

The detailed report identified a total of 38 cities where dog bite incidents have become a pressing issue. Beyond the top three, cities like St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Dallas also showed significant activity, with 47, 44, and 43 reported cases, respectively. The persistent occurrences reveal a pattern that calls for immediate intervention. The campaign aims to highlight effective ways to mitigate the risks, implying that responsible pet ownership can significantly decrease these potentially dangerous encounters.

USPS takes these matters seriously, ensuring that mail carriers are trained to handle properties where dogs are present. They are instructed to assess situations and take necessary precautions when delivering mail to homes with pets. However, the reality remains that dog attacks pose serious risks, leading to injuries that may require hospitalization, thus reinforcing the need for comprehensive strategies to prevent such incidents. Echoing this sentiment, Leeann Theriault, the USPS employee safety and health awareness manager, emphasized the shared responsibility of dog owners to maintain secure environments for their pets.

Public feedback related to the campaign underscores the urgency of educating pet owners. Theriault reiterated that reinforcing proper dog behavior and command training is essential in preventing incidents. The message is clear: all dogs, irrespective of size or breed, possess the capacity to bite when they feel threatened or cornered. The USPS urges customers to understand the necessity of securing their dogs at the time of mail delivery to ensure the safety of both the dogs and the mail carriers.

Going forward, the USPS’s proactive campaign will persist in its mission to reduce dog bite incidents. They empower mail carriers to exercise discretion when encountering potentially dangerous situations, allowing them to halt mail delivery until safety measures are assured. The ongoing emphasis on safety and awareness is crucial as the USPS works diligently to create a secure environment for its employees and mitigate the risks posed by loose or aggressive dogs.
