Dr. Sachin Kulkarni, an anesthesiologist from Sea Cliff, New York, decided to get a checkup when he turned 40 in 2022. He had been experiencing some gastrointestinal issues, which he initially attributed to irritable bowel syndrome. However, after further evaluation, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer in June 2023. The diagnosis came as a shock to Kulkarni, but he was determined to face the challenge head-on.

Kulkarni decided to approach his cancer treatment like a job, attending all appointments, following medical advice, and staying organized. His treatment plan included five cycles of systemic chemotherapy, surgery to remove a part of his colon, a cancerous lymph node, and two lesions on his liver, as well as the implantation of a hepatic artery infusion pump for targeted chemotherapy. Throughout the treatment process, Kulkarni remained optimistic and focused on moving forward.

The support of his family, friends, and community played a crucial role in Kulkarni’s journey. His wife, Sapana Kulkarni, took on the roles of both parent and caregiver, while their community organized meal trains and provided emotional support. Kulkarni acknowledged the importance of sharing his experience with others and giving back to the community by offering support to those facing similar challenges through the Sea Cliff Cancer Alliance.

As Kulkarni continues his treatment and recovery, he has been making significant lifestyle changes to prioritize his health and well-being. He has become more physically active, adopted a mostly vegetarian diet, and reduced his alcohol intake. Despite the challenges he has faced, Kulkarni feels grateful and appreciative of his family, career, and overall life. Moving forward, he recognizes that there will be ups and downs, but he remains hopeful and determined to continue moving in the right direction.

Overall, Kulkarni’s journey with cancer has been a transformative experience that has allowed him to reevaluate his priorities, focus on his health, and appreciate the support of his loved ones and community. Through his positive outlook and determination, he has navigated through the challenges of his diagnosis and treatment, inspiring others to face their own struggles with resilience and hope.
