Petunia, a rescue dog from California, was crowned the 2025 winner of the “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest on August 8 at the Sonoma-Marin Fair. Accompanied by her owner, Shannon Nyman, Petunia captured the top prize in a nearly 50-year-old competition that celebrates dogs with unconventional looks. The contest, which attracts a diverse range of entries, showcases not just a lighthearted spirit but also emphasizes the significance of dog adoption and the beauty found in all animals, irrespective of their appearance.

The “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest serves a deeper purpose beyond mere entertainment. It advocates for dog adoption and shines a spotlight on shelter animals, many of which have faced considerable hardships, including backgrounds in puppy mills. By highlighting these unique canines, the event aims to transform public perceptions about what truly makes dogs deserving of love and homes. Organizers stress that “pedigree does not define the pet,” signaling a message that resonates with potential adopters nationwide.

Participants in the contest come from various breeds and sizes, representing dogs with unconventional appearances. Health and safety protocols are strictly enforced; all contestants must present veterinary paperwork prior to the event, and additional on-site checks are performed. The event includes pre-contest entertainment, informative sessions on pet care, and resources for adoption, creating a comprehensive celebration of animal welfare. Many competitors display unique features, such as missing teeth, dangling tongues, and deformities, embodying the contest’s ethos that every dog has its own charm.

In the 2025 contest, another notable competitor was Jinny Lu, a 5-year-old pug rescued from Korea, who ultimately secured second place along with a spirit award. Her inclusion, alongside other diverse contestants, reinforces the contest’s message of embracing the differences that make each dog special. As the participants strut their stuff, they enchant judges and audiences alike, creating an atmosphere filled with pride and celebration for those imperfectly perfect pups.

The celebration of quirky canines has garnered support not just from participants but also from organizations advocating for animal welfare. Rescue and adoption groups set up booths, offering resources and information to the public about other pets in need of homes. With nearly 50 years of history, the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest has become a cornerstone event reflecting the belief that every dog has value, instilling a sense of pride in their unique identities.

Following Petunia’s victory, a tour is planned, beginning with an appearance on the TODAY show on August 11. The ongoing celebration around her win underscores the importance of compassionate choices regarding pet adoption and the joy that comes from embracing the most unconventional characteristics in our furry friends. The contest continues to foster an inclusive spirit, encouraging animal lovers to appreciate the distinct beauty of every dog, championing the cause of those still waiting for their forever homes.
