A shocking crime has unfolded in Bellerose, Queens, where an elderly couple, Frank and Maureen Olton, both in their seventies, were brutally murdered in their home. According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, the couple was at home when Jamel McGriff, a 42-year-old ex-con with a lengthy criminal history, forced his way in under the pretense of needing to charge his phone. Once inside, the couple was subjected to horrific violence, resulting in a gruesome scene that shocked the local community and raised deep concerns about safety in the area.
McGriff has been charged with an extensive list of crimes, including 14 counts of murder, alongside charges for kidnapping, burglary, robbery, arson, and identity theft among others. The District Attorney emphasized that this brutal act of violence not only claimed two lives but also shattered the sense of security in the city. If convicted, McGriff faces life in prison. His actions were documented on surveillance footage, which shows him attempting to enter another home nearby before ultimately gaining access to the Oltons’ residence.
After entering their home, Frank Olton allowed McGriff into the backyard, where both men were subsequently seen entering the house. The murder investigation took a grim turn when firefighters arrived to extinguish a blaze at the Oltons’ residence, alerted by their son, an FDNY EMT. Upon arrival, they found Maureen severely injured in the living room and Frank bound and stabbed in the basement, marking the scene with violence that the district attorney described as horrific.
McGriff’s violent behavior continued beyond the initial crime; he allegedly misused Frank Olton’s credit cards to make several purchases at Macy’s and sold the couple’s phones using his own identification. The financial transactions helped law enforcement trace him, leading to his capture in Manhattan after the heinous acts were committed.
