Apple’s next generation of iPhones, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, is expected to feature a return to photographic uniformity with both models having a 5x zoom equivalent lens. The current iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have a disparity in terms of telephoto zoom, with the Pro Max offering a more powerful 3x zoom compared to the Pro’s main lens. Apple had previously cited size constraints as the reason for this difference, with the smaller Pro model lacking the physical space for a bigger zoom. However, with the upcoming Pro models rumored to be slightly bigger, there may be room for the 5x zoom.

A new supplier report from DigiTimes suggests that Apple will include periscope lenses in more models in the upcoming iPhone lineup. Largan, which supplied periscope lenses for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, is expected to continue as a supplier, while GSEO may join as a new supplier for the new iPhones. This aligns with a previous report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested that the iPhone 16 Pro would feature Apple’s tetraprism periscope lens, a design that blends seamlessly with the other lenses on the phone.

While rumors are not confirmation, the inclusion of a 5x zoom in the upcoming iPhone models would be a highly effective feature that many users have been wanting. The current disparity between the Pro and Pro Max models in terms of camera capabilities has been a point of contention for some users, and aligning the two models in this regard would be a positive step. This move would also make sense for Apple from a marketing perspective, as it could attract more users who desire the telephoto zoom but are hesitant to go for the larger and more expensive Pro Max model.

In the current generation of iPhones, the Pro Max has often had the better camera capabilities, and it seems that Apple may be moving towards a more uniform approach with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. By including the 5x zoom in both models, Apple could offer a more consistent and appealing experience for users. Overall, the rumored changes to the camera setup in the upcoming iPhones indicate a positive direction for Apple and could address some of the concerns users have had with the current generation of devices.

As with any rumors, it’s important to take these reports with a grain of salt until Apple officially confirms the details of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. However, the consistency in the rumors and reports from various sources suggest that there may be some truth to the inclusion of a 5x zoom lens in the upcoming models. If these reports are accurate, Apple could be setting the stage for a significant improvement in the camera capabilities of its flagship smartphones, offering users a more versatile and premium photography experience.
