NYC Mayoral Frontrunner Zohran Mamdani’s Father, a Professor, Claims Hitler Was Inspired by Abraham Lincoln.

In the midst of the 2022 New York City mayoral race, candidate Zohran Mamdani has attracted attention not only for his socialist ideology but also for the controversial views expressed by his father, Mahmood Mamdani, a prominent academic. During a panel discussion at the Asia Society, Mahmood made a striking claim that Adolf Hitler drew inspiration for the Holocaust from Abraham Lincoln’s policies towards Native Americans. This assertion frames Lincoln not as a liberator but as a forebear of genocide, suggesting a troubling legacy in the context of American history. Mahmood Mamdani’s provocative remarks indicate his view that America’s actions, particularly concerning indigenous populations, laid groundwork for future atrocities.

Zohran Mamdani credits his distinct political perspective to a privileged upbringing, heavily influenced by discussions around politics and global issues with his educated parents. His mother, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, and his father, a renowned professor at Columbia University, provided a rich intellectual environment. The elder Mamdani contends that America symbolizes the start of settler-colonialism, a view that carries implications on how he interprets U.S. history. During his discussion, he further argued that the Nuremberg Laws in Nazi Germany were modeled after American legislation, aiming to draw parallels between American historical injustices and the actions of the Third Reich, thus inferring a shared culpability in systemic oppression.

Critically, Mahmood Mamdani has emphasized the concept that both nationalism and colonialism share a common foundation, asserting that the political aspirations of the Allies during World War II mirrored those of the Nazis. He stated that the goal of both parties was to create “pure” nations, devoid of minority populations. This narrative complicates the historical outcomes of the war, suggesting that the defeat of the Nazis did not equate to a moral victory for humanity, as it still resulted in ethnic cleansing efforts in Eastern Europe. Such rhetoric raises significant questions about how these ideologies have permeated the younger Mamdani’s own political aspirations and potential policies.

Amid the broader discourse on his family background, Zohran Mamdani has faced scrutiny over his radical remarks during various public appearances. Videos resurfaced from a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, where he encouraged attendees to maintain uncompromising goals of “seizing the means of production.” This phrase aligns with classic Marxist doctrine and highlights Mamdani’s commitment to socialist objectives. Additionally, in another video produced by The Gravel Institute, he advocated for transforming housing into a public good, rather than a commodity, suggesting radical changes in urban living arrangements, such as converting luxury apartments into communal living spaces.

Mamdani’s proposed housing solutions reflect his broader concerns about the systemic issues affecting New York City, including the ongoing housing crisis. He advocates for measures that would move towards the “de-commodification” of housing, arguing that such a transformation is essential for addressing the current economic disparities and social injustices prevalent in urban centers. These views resonate with his emphasis on communal resources and cooperative living, which are key themes in socialist thought, further distinguishing him from more traditional political candidates.

Concerns also arise from Mahmood Mamdani’s viewpoint on terrorism, as he has claimed that the term “suicide bomber” misconstrues the nature of their actions, equating such individuals to soldiers engaged in warfare. His controversial statements about Israel being the “logical conclusion of Nazism” add another layer of complexity to discussions around his son’s potential governance. Both Mahmood’s and Zohran’s stances raise questions regarding the implications for Mamdani’s policies if elected, particularly related to social justice, international relations, and domestic governance. As the election approaches, the Mamdani family’s contentious narratives continue to fuel debate on the cultural and political landscape of New York City.
