Olivia Hussey Eisley, known for her role as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73. Her death was announced via her official Instagram account, with a post on December 27th. Described as a remarkable person filled with warmth, wisdom, and kindness, she lived a life devoted to the arts, spirituality, and animals. She is survived by her loving family, including her children, husband of 35 years, and grandson.

Hussey Eisley was only 15 when she starred in Romeo and Juliet alongside Leonard Whiting as Romeo. The film was a critical success and a box-office hit, earning four Oscar nominations and two wins in 1969. In an interview with The Guardian in 2018, she reflected on her role as Juliet, expressing her love for the character but also her dislike for the publicity that came with the film. Despite its success, the movie faced controversy due to a legal battle over a nude scene involving Hussey and Whiting.

The initial complaint, filed in December 2022, alleged that the actors were misled by the director into believing there would be no nudity in the film. A judge ultimately dismissed the case in May 2023, but Hussey and Whiting continued to pursue legal action against Paramount Pictures in February 2024, claiming that the studio digitally redistributed the movie without their approval. Throughout her career, Hussey Eisley also had memorable roles in projects such as Jesus of Nazareth and Death on the Nile.
