Baltimore Orioles minor league infielder Luis Guevara, aged 19, tragically passed away following a jet ski accident in Lido Key, Florida, as confirmed by the team in a statement. The incident involved a collision between two jet skis carrying four individuals, resulting in their immediate ejection into the water. According to reports, Guevara succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, prompting an outpouring of grief from the Orioles organization and the wider baseball community.

In the aftermath of this tragic incident, Mike Elias, the Orioles’ executive vice president and general manager, emphasized the profound loss felt within the organization. He described Guevara as a beloved team member and extended condolences to his family, friends, and teammates. The Orioles requested privacy for those affected during this particularly difficult time, highlighting the emotional impact of such an unexpected loss.

Luis Guevara’s journey in baseball began when he joined the Baltimore Orioles in January 2023 as an international free agent from Venezuela. His versatility on the field allowed him to play various positions, including shortstop, third base, and second base. This flexibility made him a valuable asset as he progressed through the Orioles’ robust farm system, showcasing his potential as a promising player in the making.

Guevara’s minor league career started in the Dominican Summer League, where he played for the Orioles Orange team for two years. His prowess on the field saw him ascend through the ranks, starting in 2025 with the Double-A Chesapeake BaySox in the Eastern League before later joining the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds and eventually the Florida Complex League team. His consistent performance contributed to a strong start in his career.

Throughout his tenure in the minor leagues, Guevara demonstrated impressive skills at the plate, boasting a batting average of .281 along with 49 runs batted in and 41 stolen bases across 114 games. His success reflected the hard work and dedication he put into the game, endearing him to fans and teammates alike. The tragedy of losing such a young talent raises questions about the vulnerabilities athletes face beyond the diamond.

The impact of Guevara’s untimely death resonates deeply within the Orioles organization, characterized by the sense of community that professional sports often foster. As tributes pour in from fans and fellow players alike, the focus remains on honoring Guevara’s memory and recognizing his contributions to baseball. The loss serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the lasting legacy that even a brief career in sports can leave behind.
