Danielle and Kreg Jones, owners of Inscription Architects in New Hampshire, decided to undertake a renovation project with their son after he graduated high school. After facing challenges, they found an abandoned 19th-century schoolhouse in Weare, New Hampshire, listed for sale as a residential property. The couple saw the potential in the historic building and decided to purchase it for $210,000 in March 2021. The schoolhouse, built in 1856, had served various purposes before being converted into a home for the Jones family.

The Jones family spent $220,000 and eight months transforming the schoolhouse into a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom home. They preserved many original features of the building, including the floors, ceilings, chalk rails, doors, and storm windows. The renovation process was a special experience for the family as it allowed them to work together and teach their son construction skills. They also added colorful and modern touches while staying true to the historic nature of the property. The converted schoolhouse now serves as their family home, providing plenty of natural light and a comfortable living space.

Living in the converted schoolhouse for over three years, the Jones family has found joy in the unique living space they have created. With large windows and historical elements, the home reflects their love for old buildings and architectural design. The couple has learned to embrace new challenges and ideas, not worrying about outside opinions, as they continue to make the space their own. While they typically move to a new project every couple of years, they feel content in their current home and do not have plans for a new renovation project at the moment.

Despite their history of renovating homes, the Jones family considers the converted schoolhouse to be a long-term residence for them. With a record of moving every few years, they feel at peace in their current home and do not feel the urge to start a new project anytime soon. While they have no immediate plans for another renovation, they remain open to new opportunities that may come their way. The unique experience of renovating a historic schoolhouse as a family has created lasting memories and a sense of accomplishment for the Jones family.
