In a recent interview on “Fox & Friends,” Phil Mickelson shared that tensions between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have not completely dissipated, despite ongoing negotiations between the two circuits. However, Mickelson emphasized that the rival golf league is here to stay due to what it offers to golf fans. The six-time major winner highlighted the unique structure of LIV Golf, which taps into a market that the PGA Tour has historically been unable to reach. Mickelson pointed out that while the PGA Tour focuses on growing the game nationally, LIV Golf aims to grow the game globally, receiving incredible reception worldwide.

The Saudi-backed LIV Golf league launched in 2022, causing uproar within the golf world by luring many of the Tour’s top players with lucrative contracts. Although tensions between the two circuits seemed to ease after the PGA Tour, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF), and the DP World Tour signed a framework agreement in June 2023, no final agreement was reached before the deal expired. Since then, former President Donald Trump has intervened in hopes of reuniting the golf community. Mickelson highlighted the importance of appealing to a younger audience, a demographic that has historically been underserved by traditional golf events, but one that LIV Golf has managed to attract with its modern and more engaging approach.

Mickelson emphasized that LIV Golf caters to a younger crowd, making the sport cool and enjoyable to watch, creating a relaxed atmosphere that appeals to a broader audience. He noted the demand for what LIV Golf provides and highlighted the importance of merging the two tours, PGA and LIV, which would benefit the sport overall. Trump added his support for negotiations to take place, expressing his hope for a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, believing it would be a positive development. However, the PGA Tour reportedly rejected PIF’s latest bid to invest in PGA Tour Enterprises, signaling that negotiations between the two circuits are ongoing and challenging.

Despite ongoing tensions and negotiations, Mickelson remains positive about the future of golf and the potential for the two tours to merge. Recognizing the need for traditional competition and historical events alongside more modern and engaging formats, he believes that both circuits have a role to play in growing the sport. With Trump’s involvement in facilitating negotiations and his support for a potential merger, there is hope that the PGA Tour and LIV Golf can find common ground and work towards a unified future for golf. The ongoing discussions reflect the changing landscape of the sport and the evolving preferences of golf fans, highlighting the need for innovation and adaptation to continue growing the game globally.
