Poll Finds 85% of Canadians Support Government Regulation of AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to permeate various aspects of Canadian society, a significant majority of Canadians express a desire for regulatory measures at all government levels to ensure the ethical and safe deployment of these technologies. A recent poll conducted by Leger found that 85% of Canadians support the regulation of AI tools, with 57% strongly endorsing such measures. Public opinion on AI’s societal implications, however, varies considerably; the survey revealed that 34% view AI as beneficial, while 36% see it as harmful, and about 31% remain uncertain. Jennifer McLeod Macey from Leger highlights the complexity of these perspectives, noting that trust in AI is nuanced depending on its applications and implications.

In the professional landscape, AI’s adoption has been predominantly positive, with its utilization in sectors such as education, healthcare, and government. A separate poll by Ipsos Public Affairs indicated that 56% of Canadians using AI in their workplaces believe it enhances productivity, especially among younger generations—69% of Gen Z respondents reported positive effects. However, tech acceptance appears to decline with age; only 50% of Gen X and 38% of Baby Boomers shared the same sentiment. Despite this productivity boost, trust levels are variable; approximately 64% of Canadians trust AI for basic household or educational tasks, but trust plummets to just 36% for health advice and 31% for legal guidance. Concerns about AI’s reliability extend to educational contexts, where only 18% believe AI could effectively replace teachers.

The risks associated with AI are underscored by experts like Steve DiPaola, a researcher at Simon Fraser University. He points out the necessity of regulation to address issues such as deepfakes, where AI-generated content can misleadingly represent individuals—an issue gaining prominence on social media. In Canada, deepfakes have recently been exploited to create dubious political ads featuring the likenesses of politicians like Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, prompting government action against these misleading uses. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security has also raised alarms about AI-generated messages used to impersonate officials for fraudulent purposes, further highlighting the security threats posed by unregulated AI applications.

Despite these concerns, DiPaola remains optimistic about AI’s educational potential, sharing his plans to utilize an AI “sidekick” named “Kia” to delve into ethical discussions surrounding AI. This innovative approach aims to prepare students for a future where working alongside AI technologies is the norm. He emphasizes that while people may initially be captivated by AI capabilities, they must recognize its inherent limitations as a controlled tool rather than a fully autonomous entity.

Even with strong public demand for regulation, Canada’s AI Minister Evan Solomon indicates a shift in governmental focus. In his inaugural address, he mentioned a pivot away from an overemphasis on warnings and regulation towards fostering economic benefits associated with AI. Solomon’s office reaffirmed the government’s commitment to responsible AI use, highlighting ongoing investments in secure infrastructure and frameworks that prioritize safety, bias reduction, and privacy concerns. As Parliament prepares to reconvene, further plans and updates regarding AI regulation are anticipated.

As the conversation surrounding AI progresses, balancing technological advancement with ethical considerations remains crucial for Canadian society. While the majority of citizens advocate for regulatory frameworks to mitigate potential harms, their nuanced views reflect differing levels of trust in AI applications. The ongoing exploration of AI’s implications in various sectors shows promise but also necessitates vigilant oversight to ensure its responsible and beneficial integration into daily life. Collectively, these discussions will shape the future landscape of AI within Canada, reinforcing a commitment to leveraging technology while safeguarding societal values.
