Two anti-Israel protesters were arrested at NASCAR’s Chicago Street Race for protesting against Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s alleged use of state funds to support Israel’s actions in Palestine. The protesters held up signs and locked themselves inside the fence for 40 minutes before being removed. The organizers of the protest released a statement condemning government actions they believe contribute to genocide and mass imprisonment agendas. They also criticized NASCAR driver Alon Day, who is Jewish and publicly supports Israel, accusing the race of being used as a platform for Israeli propaganda.

The protesters also criticized Day for wrecking his car during practice and missing the race due to not having a backup car. Day, the only Israeli driver in NASCAR, had planned to pay tribute to hostages held by Hamas after recent terrorist attacks. His car was sponsored by Jet Support Services Inc. and Setna iO, featuring the colors of the Israeli flag and the Hebrew word for life. Day expressed his motivation to succeed not just for himself but also for the hostages, Israeli soldiers, and the Jewish community in the United States. He also highlighted the dangers faced by those showing support for Israel amidst rising anti-Israel sentiments.

The organizers of the protest called on President Joe Biden to demand a permanent cease-fire and cut all aid to Israel, including funds from local and state governments. They also criticized Pritzker’s plan to allocate over $900 million for building new prisons in Illinois. The protest highlighted ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the differing perspectives held by various groups within the United States. The demonstration at the NASCAR race underscored the complex social and political issues surrounding support for Israel and criticism of its government’s actions.

Day, who spoke about the challenges faced by pro-Israel individuals in the current climate, emphasized his commitment to succeeding in his racing career while also supporting his country and those affected by conflicts in the Middle East. He expressed his determination to continue competing at a high level and using his platform to raise awareness about critical issues. The incident at the race showed the intersection of sports, politics, and personal beliefs, with the debate around Israel’s actions and international relations playing out in unexpected settings like a NASCAR event. The clash of ideologies and public protests demonstrated the diverse viewpoints held by individuals within American society.
