Harvest NYC Inc., a New York company, is recalling 200-gram packages of Enoki Mushrooms due to possible listeria contamination. The recall was announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after samples collected from a store in Buffalo, New York revealed the presence of listeria monocytogenes in some of the packages. These mushrooms were distributed by Hofood99 Inc. to retail stores nationwide and come in a green plastic package with barcode 6975730520101 on the back label.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. The FDA notice states that healthy individuals may only experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, but pregnant women are at a higher risk of miscarriages and stillbirths due to listeria infection. Despite the contamination, no illnesses related to the consumption of these mushrooms have been reported according to the FDA.

Consumers who purchased the Enoki mushroom packages between January 11-31 are urged to destroy the products immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. This recall is the second within a month related to Enoki mushrooms due to listeria concerns. Last month, New Age International Inc. recalled all lots of its Daily Veggies brand Enoki Mushroom. Enoki mushrooms are commonly used in Asian cuisine and are known for being highly nutritious, providing fiber, antioxidants, and B vitamins in each serving.

Listeria contamination in food products is a serious concern as it can lead to severe health issues and even death for high-risk populations. Symptoms of listeria infection can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to listeria infection as it can lead to complications such as miscarriages and stillbirths. The recall of the Enoki mushroom packages is a preventive measure to ensure the safety of consumers and prevent any potential illnesses related to listeria contamination.

Hofood99 Inc., the distributor of the recalled Enoki mushroom packages, is taking necessary steps to address the issue of listeria contamination. The company is working in cooperation with the FDA to ensure the removal of contaminated products from retail stores nationwide. Consumers are advised to check their products for the packaging details and immediately dispose of any packages that match the recalled items. This recall highlights the importance of food safety measures and the need for timely action to prevent potential health risks associated with consuming contaminated food products.

In conclusion, the recall of Enoki mushroom packages by Harvest NYC Inc. due to listeria contamination serves as a reminder of the potential risks posed by foodborne pathogens. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about recalls and take necessary precautions to prevent foodborne illnesses. The FDA’s swift action in announcing the recall and informing the public about the potential risks associated with consuming contaminated mushrooms demonstrates the agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the food supply. By following the recall instructions and disposing of or returning the recalled Enoki mushroom packages, consumers can protect themselves and their families from the dangers of listeria contamination.
