Reevaluating Amusement Park Rides for the Better After Watching Netflix’s ‘Critical’ Docuseries

Netflix’s original docuseries Critical: Between Life and Death made a significant impact upon its release, debuting at No. 7 on the platform’s Top 10 list during the week of July 21. This documentary stands out in a genre traditionally dominated by scripted medical dramas like ER and The Pitt, bringing real-life emergencies to the forefront and capturing the urgent, high-stakes nature of medical crises as they unfold. Its raw portrayal of incidents involving blood, trauma, and emotional turmoil allows viewers a stark glimpse into the realities faced by medical responders. However, the series didn’t maintain its momentum, quickly falling out of the Top 10. This could be attributed to its intensity, which may be overwhelming for some viewers.

The show’s premiere episode set a jarring tone with a segment focusing on four individuals involved in a catastrophic amusement park ride malfunction. The graphic nature of the events, while compelling, struck a nerve for some, including myself, prompting a reconsideration of my own comfort levels regarding thrill rides. As summer activities ramp up, a visceral depiction of real-life injuries from rides was unsettling, intertwining personal fears with the realities presented on screen. My unease during viewings reflected a broader concern that such trauma could happen in ordinary settings like local fairs, raising the anxiety surrounding these recreational activities.

One particularly gripping part of the show included the uncovering of hospital call centers activated in response to the incident, illustrating the frantic dispatch of ambulances, helicopters, and emergency personnel. The process of trauma response is vividly chronicled, as viewers witness the harrowing transport of patients to various trauma centers across London. The series employs an extensive array of 40 cameras to document emergency responses and subsequent medical interventions, providing an intimate view of life-saving procedures. For those sensitive to graphic medical content, including myself, certain images were challenging to watch, eliciting moments of discomfort that prompted a turn away from the screen.

Despite the grim visuals, a hopeful element materializes when viewers learn the eventual fate of the patients. All four individuals not only survive the ordeal but return to lives that are comparably normal post-recovery. This uplifting epilogue helps to offset the intense medical reality depicted throughout the episode, reminding audiences of both medical advancements and the resilience of the human spirit. However, it does little to alleviate the instinctual fear of participating in thrilling yet potentially dangerous activities.

The series also sheds light on broader issues, highlighting that approximately 50% of trauma center calls in London result from violence, emphasizing the rarity of accidents like the amusement park incident. While statistically less common, the dramatization of such events fuels a personal, lingering panic about being injured on thrill rides, reinforcing an intrinsic fear many share when partaking in so-called fun activities. This documentary evokes a primal sense of vulnerability that resonates especially in settings designed for enjoyment and amusement.

Ultimately, Critical: Between Life and Death serves as a powerful exploration of medical crises, reflecting not just the skill of emergency responders but also the collective fears that lurk within everyday experiences. Unlike fictional medical dramas, where viewers find a layer of comfort in knowing the events are simulated, this documentary strips away that safety, immersing audiences in realities that many may not be prepared for. Its portrayal amplifies personal anxieties, revealing hidden fears while also offering a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of life.
