The city of Regina is planning to offer more socializing options in its downtown area by introducing a new interim space called ‘Skuare’ in the summer of 2025. The Skuare will be located on the former historic Gordon Block and Burns Hanley sites on 2160 12th Avenue and will cover an area of 11,000 square feet. It will feature a beer garden, additional retail and food/beverage units, space for food trucks, activation and performance space, washrooms, and storage for Regina Downtown’s Clean Team. Judith Veresuk, Executive Director for Regina Downtown Business Improvement District (RDBID), mentioned that shipping containers will be used for some of the units.
The Skuare aims to be a unique and inviting attraction for downtown Regina, hosting a variety of programming such as live music, markets, and movie projections on a large wall. Additionally, the space will be available for private functions like weddings and parties. While many details of the project are still being finalized, RDBID board chair Anna Gardikiotis revealed that a mural honoring the heritage of the site will be installed, along with opportunities for additional large-scale art installations. A Call for Artists will be issued in the coming months for mural and artwork installations throughout the Skuare. Funding for the project will come from the City of Regina, Harvard Developments, and RDBID, with additional sponsorship and partnership opportunities being shared with the community in January 2025.
