In honor of National Dog Month, Newsweek celebrated the joy pets bring to families by featuring reader-submitted photos and stories of their beloved dogs. These furry companions often light up their owners’ lives, proving to be indispensable members of the family unit. Readers are encouraged to participate in the ongoing “Pet of the Week” feature by submitting their own photos and stories, giving them a chance to showcase their pets while spreading joy to others.

This week’s winner is Laina, a rescue hound whose quirky habit of lounging in laundry baskets endeared her to her owner, Patti Generale. Generale shared that Laina is highly food-motivated and often seeks comfort from her family during meal times. Her playful yet sweet demeanor has been a source of joy for the Generale household, making her the perfect ambassador for the spirit of National Dog Month.

Among the finalists, Vicki Peacock submitted her two Cavachons, Harvey and Coco, who are a mix of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frisé. Initially looking to adopt a male dog, Peacock was smitten by a female from the same litter and ended up with both. At seven years old, they bring happiness and occasional mischief to her quiet home, where they enjoy cuddling and making friends. Their personalities complement each other well, with Harvey often taking the lead, embodying both playfulness and gentleness.

Karen Garcia introduced Daisy, a one-year-old “Rotten Rottsky” who is a delightful mix of Rottweiler and Siberian Husky. Daisy came from an unexpected litter and has a dominating yet entertaining personality that often leads to humorous situations. Garcia’s tales of Daisy highlight the dog’s mischievous nature, encapsulating the joy and unpredictability that pets can bring into our lives, especially for first-time dog owners.

Jamie High presented her playful French Bulldog, Pierre, who is also nearing the age of one. High revealed that Pierre has been a constant source of joy and companionship, especially during challenging times in her life. Although he can be a handful, his spirited antics bring smiles to her face daily. His playful personality makes him an unforgettable character in High’s life, illustrating the emotional support pets provide their owners.

Readers who feel their pets could also shine in the spotlight are invited to contribute to Newsweek’s “Pet of the Week.” By submitting their heartwarming stories and amusing videos, pet owners have an opportunity to share the unique bond they have with their furry friends while contributing to the community’s celebration of the unconditional love dogs bring to our lives.
