On Friday, authorities identified 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White from Kennesaw, Georgia, as the suspect in the fatal shooting of DeKalb County police officer David Rose, who was 33. The incident occurred near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta around 5 p.m. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), White fired indiscriminately in front of the CDC campus, causing extensive damage by striking multiple windows. Visual evidence released by the GBI depicted numerous shell casings littering the scene, highlighting the violence of the shooting.
Officer Rose was critically injured during the onslaught and was rushed to Emory University Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, responding officers heard more shots originating from a nearby CVS pharmacy. Upon investigation, they discovered White on the second floor of the pharmacy with at least one gunshot wound, the source of which—whether inflicted by police or self-inflicted—remains uncertain. The motive behind White’s actions is still unknown. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens characterized White as a “known person” with particular interests, hinting at a more complex background surrounding the suspect.
The situation unfolded on Clifton Road, adjacent to Emory University, which is home to a daycare facility caring for over 90 children, none of whom were harmed during the shooting. The GBI is leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance from the FBI’s Atlanta office. Officer David Rose joined the DeKalb County Police Department in September 2024 and graduated from the police academy in March, quickly becoming known for his dedication and professionalism. His prior service as a Marine in Afghanistan added to his commendable profile. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young children, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from the community and fellow law enforcement officers.
